What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

Random Thoughts!… with Bill Reed!? (June 7, 2011)

Random Hijack! Yes, I am stealing Chad Nevett’s bit for a week whilst he takes a hiatus from this column. Yes, this is all Travis Pelkie’s fault. It’s Random Thoughts time! Get excited! (Or don’t. It’s really up to you. This is a free country.)

What I bought – 23 February 2011

Thanks to the mild weather, the trees retained their foliage longer than usual. Red and gold, ocher and amber leaped to the eye. How beautifully the leaves aged on ten thousand twigs! No politics could produce such glory in a forest. Only so natural and simple a thing as death. (Frederic Morton, from A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888/1889)

What a cute hat! What an odd comic! This issue sure is ... shocking! Extreeeeeeeme close-up!!!!! Hey, not too phallic! It's disturbingly sexy! I gotta get me a bear trap! Owls, snakes, and panthers - oh my! Yeah, no Nicola Scott on this issue Hey, it's an issue! I'm not sure what's going on on that cover More goodness!

What I bought – 9 February 2011

There was no hope for an empire that lost the will to prosecute the grand and awful business of adventure. (Michael Chabon, from Gentlemen of the Road)

Who knew Edison had his own robot? Oh, Klarion - why do you have to be so mean? Fightin' crime and hangin' tough! Man, if I weren't already married, I'd insist on those two on top of the cake! You want nudity? You GOT nudity! If only you could really do that to missiles! What's Danny doing with his left hand? Who can stay mad at Alice even though her comic is late? Why does his jacket not zip straight up the middle? Is he too cool for that? After his date in this issue, how depressed can he really be? Ah, romance! Fact: Rebekah Isaacs is awesome That's a weirdly defined back/shoulder on Bethany there Charles the Fat, unfortunately, does NOT appear in this comic periodical! Catman has some anger issues Why the cover artist change? WHY?!?!?!? I love the plummeting dudes in the background even though, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense He's totally pulling a Samson! People and dinosaurs living at the same time? Why not? Yep, still buying it Yay, it's back ... but for how long? The funny thing about this cover ...... is that Dejah Thoris wears more clothes on it than in the actual comic! Man, I really like that cover Will this be the last Cap Omnibus I purchase???? Swimming through all those eyes can't be good for you! This is ... odd

Box of Comics: New Year’s Resolution Comics

For 2011, I’ve told myself to only buy masterpieces, or comics that are as good as I remember comics being when I was a kid. Reviews of such comics– under the cut!

What I bought – 15 December 2010

“You see,” Lardner said at the long bar of the Artist and Writers Restaurant, “Duke thought if his dream came true he would be a different person. He’s not unhappy about the dream. He’s unhappy that he is still the same man. Happens to a lot of us. We get somewhere we wanted and find we’re still ourselves.” (Roger Kahn, from The Boys of Summer)

'Conceived' is spelled wrong on the cover!!!!! Man, those are some big-ass thighs! 'Do you like my big gun, Dick?!?!?' You gotta love that tag line! He has a '007' on his watch - that's a nice touch So much RAGE!!! The dragon just wanted to mate with the airplane! It has a guarantee! I'm digging this cover Who doesn't love Mouse Guard?Commies, that's who! None of this actually happens in this comic! Your own ... Nuclear ... Jesus ... Let's get physical, physical! Spoooooky! Man-Thing does not appear in this comic! Look how cute they are, eavesdropping on their past selves! Yay! They're all ready to kick ass! Oh, Thor - you can't stay mad at X-Factor! Well, that's charming! Boy, I like that logo Ellis/Conner? SOLD! It's Ditkoriffic! Everyone loves Yetis!

What I bought – 10 November 2010

“Bonding is like the romance in an Arnold Schwarzeneggar movie.”

If it happens along the way, fine.”

But it ain’t the reason you go there.” (Bruce Feirstein, from Real Men Don’t Bond)

How does he see? Who's supposed to be shooting at him? Well, that would look weird in World War II So ...much ...coolness! ATTACK!!!!! Run, you running people, run like the wind! I've always wanted to walk casually away from an explosion More ...coolness! Yeah, I don't like the title either So much hair! She's all mysterious! Frank Quitely, gettin' paid! Oh, I get it - he's inside a whale! Ah, young, creepy love! Chicken power! It's all Eighties and shit! Let's do some analyzing! Those pants are stylin'! Well, he looks peeved

Sunday Brunch: 8/8/10

Links, art, criticism, and discussion– sans the porn, it’s another week on the internet!

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK: What if newspaper comic strips were written by today’s premiere comic book writers?I find the newspaper comics page to be a sad, boring place, populated by unfunny drain-circlers, occasionally peppered with decent strips or good art. So what if your favorite comic writer got in on the action? What would they write? Can you imagine the bizarre possibilities? My suggestions under the cut.

Five Great Comics from the Past Few Months

My Box of Comics posts usually arrive fashionably late, but in this instance, the party ended weeks ago and the Box of Comics is still picking out a tie. So let’s give a quick look at the really good stuff, the comics worth praising from the past few lunar cycles. I suspect many of you have overlooked some (or all) of these gems. (And again, thanks to the Discount Comic Book Service, and also HeavyInk, for providing me with my regular comics fix.)

What I bought – 30 June 2010

The difference between men and sheep seems to be that men, unlike sheep, need not be led to the slaughter but are carried there on the wings of their own enthusiasm. (William Gerhardie, from God’s Fifth Column)

Thank Vishnu he's not wearing that thing in this issue! Will I piss off Brian Clevinger yet again?!?!?!? Who knew Martians flew around in actual flying saucers? Only three months late? Heck, that's not bad at all! All comics should end with as awesome a last page as this! Mark Buckingham had to leave his own title to do a cover or two! Hot diggity, I love that cover! Mars seems awfully crowded in this issue, doesn't it? Totally worth the wait! Yet another fantastic cover! Man, the main character does some prodigous projectile vomiting in this issue!

What I bought – 19 May 2010

They hated Thomas for his courage, his brief moment as a bird. Everybody has dreams about flying. Thomas flew.

One of his dreams came true for just a second, just enough to make it real. (Sherman Alexie, from “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”)

3-D Man's arm makes it look like Jimmy has a multicolored moustache, which I think would improve his chances with the ladies! I totally want someone to send me that postcard! They should use the Bat-Phone in the 'real' Bat-titles! Big pictures split into many covers often look weird, like this one does You know, conceptually, this is a dumb cover, but it just looks so gorgeous! This cover has nothing to do with what's inside, but it's still kind of neat! I love this comic a little more each issue, I tells ya! Overcompensating much, King Richard? This is a really misleading cover You there! Yub ym koob! What is it with those guys from Perth? Yet more Vertigo crime! Whoo-hoo! Well, this is going to get messy

Sunday Brunch: 5/9/10

This week’s episode of Sunday Brunch is like buying a gallon of skim milk instead of a quart of whole. So you get all the fatty comments from me cut off, but a whole lot of comics nutrients. Something like that, anyway.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If Batman was a flower, what flower would Batman be?

What I bought – 28 April 2010

“It took me some time to figure out that love is in the details. It’s in the books and records and the stereo and the convertible. Love is always in the details. And that’s where the pain is too.” (John Crowley, from Aegypt)

Soraya isn't really the star of the book, but you never pass up a chance to put a hot chick on the cover! He uses that gun to swat insects. True! This is only the start of the egg puns! Sue is actually on this cover ... you just can't see her! I already have this cover tattooed on my ass! Long may the mullet wave! Well, hello there! Where've you been? That cover is sure to please the ladies! Oh, Mouse Guard, why do you ever go away? 'It's your turn to pick up the tab!' 'The hell you say!' I'm not quite sure why Thomas Edison is on this cover, but whatever Every once in a while I have to bring up how very much I hate that trade dress When in doubt, put a stripper on the cover! Get funky, Nick! The entire cover is a synopsis of the interior, because Brian Hurtt is awesome! Why the hell does Blair Butler keep getting quoted on books? I love Johnson's cover designs! Boy, I really hope this book is back on track! It's for the kids! Also for the kids! Kids fighting Nazis? Definitely for the kids! Okay, I can't work in the kid theme ... just buy the original Super Spy AND this, together! Well, I checked this out briefly, and it definitely looks like it's for the kids!

What I bought – 14 April 2010

You stay in prison, what your time calls duty, honor, self-respect, and you are comfortably safe. Or you are free and crucified. Your only companions the stones, the thorns, the turning backs; the silence of cities, and their hate. (John Fowles, from The French Lieutenant’s Woman)

Feel the burn! Now with 100% less Vampire Dimension! The over/under on number of issues this lasts is SIX! Yes, this scene actually appears in the comic itself! Man, I love all of these covers! Look at those dreamy pecs! Something is creepy about that cover, and I can't figure out what! Nothing subliminal to see here, folks! What did poor Will ever do to anyone? Rassum-frassum Cronin! If you don't like Mike Grell's art, you make Baby Jesus cry! Lousy ninjas! Nipples will strike you blind! He's gleefully nutty! Poor Pauly Bruckner!
