What I bought – 13 April 2011

“Am I ever going to be told what you really think you’re doing?”

“You have been told.”

“Lie upon lie.”

“Perhaps that’s our way of telling the truth.” But then, as if she knew she had smiled once too often, she looked down and added quickly, “Maurice once said to me – when I had just asked him a question rather like yours – he said, ‘An answer is always a form of death.’ ” (John Fowles, from The Magus)

So many faces! I don't know how Stephanie is doing that, but man! that's a cool cover! It's all sharp points! Look - it's a random cover! Jihad Jones will take you out, man! Oh noes! My cover is smudged! Let's pick on hipsters! That's not good for anyone! Just a flesh wound! Yay! Incest! Oh no you dint! Boy, that's exciting! So much kookiness! Strike a pose! There's no rain in this comic! Won't all that blood gunk up the gun? Blasting your way this April! So many elements! Oh, man, I'm not touching this sucker!

What I bought – 9 March 2011

She told him about God, who resembled her strongly, an amiable, loving and sad person given to losing things, and dropping things. He it was, struggling to hold aloft so much, that fumbled and let fall their mother from out his tender embrace. (John Banville, from Doctor Copernicus)

This cover is a LOT more exciting than the interior! I hate to say this, but this is a terrible cover, although Gleason's signature is placed nicely Why are robots always grumpy? J. H. Williams III can pretty much do no wrong! Gosh, I wonder Not a hoax! Not an imaginary issue! Not a hoax! Not an imaginary issue! This issue would be a lot better if Lee Moyer painted it! That cover is totally creeping me out, man! Yay! She gets a name! Man, that cover is awesome! Mullet alert! That's just good advice for any situation Gene Ha phones in another cover I like how they both have shit-eating grins It's a good thing she's not naked, brother!

What I bought – 9 February 2011

There was no hope for an empire that lost the will to prosecute the grand and awful business of adventure. (Michael Chabon, from Gentlemen of the Road)

Who knew Edison had his own robot? Oh, Klarion - why do you have to be so mean? Fightin' crime and hangin' tough! Man, if I weren't already married, I'd insist on those two on top of the cake! You want nudity? You GOT nudity! If only you could really do that to missiles! What's Danny doing with his left hand? Who can stay mad at Alice even though her comic is late? Why does his jacket not zip straight up the middle? Is he too cool for that? After his date in this issue, how depressed can he really be? Ah, romance! Fact: Rebekah Isaacs is awesome That's a weirdly defined back/shoulder on Bethany there Charles the Fat, unfortunately, does NOT appear in this comic periodical! Catman has some anger issues Why the cover artist change? WHY?!?!?!? I love the plummeting dudes in the background even though, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense He's totally pulling a Samson! People and dinosaurs living at the same time? Why not? Yep, still buying it Yay, it's back ... but for how long? The funny thing about this cover ...... is that Dejah Thoris wears more clothes on it than in the actual comic! Man, I really like that cover Will this be the last Cap Omnibus I purchase???? Swimming through all those eyes can't be good for you! This is ... odd

She Has No Head! – Bests (And A Few Worsts) Of 2010

Closing up our month of lists and year in review on She Has No Head! is a list of my “Bests” from 2010 (and a few worsts).  Please keep in mind that I didn’t get to read ALL THE BOOKS.  For example, The Return of The Dapper Men is sitting here and wooing me with its gorgeous swan song and telling me that it could have been a contender…but I just didn’t get to it…and that’s the way it is sometimes, but of the stuff that I read (which was A LOT), here’s what I really loved the most…

A Page from Eduardo Medeiros’ Spider-Man/Juggernaut tale from Marvel's Strange Tales II #3

What I bought – 15 December 2010

“You see,” Lardner said at the long bar of the Artist and Writers Restaurant, “Duke thought if his dream came true he would be a different person. He’s not unhappy about the dream. He’s unhappy that he is still the same man. Happens to a lot of us. We get somewhere we wanted and find we’re still ourselves.” (Roger Kahn, from The Boys of Summer)

'Conceived' is spelled wrong on the cover!!!!! Man, those are some big-ass thighs! 'Do you like my big gun, Dick?!?!?' You gotta love that tag line! He has a '007' on his watch - that's a nice touch So much RAGE!!! The dragon just wanted to mate with the airplane! It has a guarantee! I'm digging this cover Who doesn't love Mouse Guard?Commies, that's who! None of this actually happens in this comic! Your own ... Nuclear ... Jesus ... Let's get physical, physical! Spoooooky! Man-Thing does not appear in this comic! Look how cute they are, eavesdropping on their past selves! Yay! They're all ready to kick ass! Oh, Thor - you can't stay mad at X-Factor! Well, that's charming! Boy, I like that logo Ellis/Conner? SOLD! It's Ditkoriffic! Everyone loves Yetis!

“I write in blood, and the best truth is a bloody truth.” (Irvin D. Yalom, from When Nietzsche Wept)

Batman needs some gum work done! Not surprisingly, it's a stunning cover! How is she standing up? If that dude is so invincible, why does he need a vest? Not surprisingly, it's a stunning cover! You mean it doesn't end well for the humans? What a shock! Sheriff Badd-Asss sure loves his penis substitute! Another great Cheung cover! I can't believe that's not Fin Fang Foom For an anniversary issue ...... this is a pretty cool cover There's just never enough killing in this series! The French love them some prostitutes!

“It’s the worst thing you’ll ever do in your life,” she said, “helping the people you love to do something that in your heart you believe is deeply wrong.” (Orson Scott Card, from Xenocide)

So many dinosaur covers this week! I don't know if I want to know what's going on here Venetian blinds - your pulp/noir staple! Why is she reaching for me?!?!?!? Has Gillen paid enough dues to make this a success? Best cover of the year? Probably Is her left hand on top of underwear, and if so, WHY DEAR GOD WHY?!?!? No wonder comics writers and artists love dinosaurs - look how cool that is! Yes, I tried this! Given the way Moses usually acts, that smile sure is creepy! They went to the X-Men crossover a bit too late! So many dinosaurs!!!!!

What can be broken, should be broken. (Dimitri Pisarev, 1840-1868)

The world would be a lot cooler if they swore in the president like this ... costumes included, of course I used to really like Brandon Peterson's art ... now it kind of freaks me out I like that you can see his ribs God forbid he lose his cigarette! She should really be looking more closely at what she's doing Oh, Darwyn Cooke - you're so groovy! Becky kicks ass! Nice of them to deliver it to the West Coast, ain't it? Squeed looks like he's doing some kind of funky boogie This seems like it's an homage, but I'm not sure what it's referencing Yes, please! That worm-thing on the cover is brought to you by a Mr. Steve Ditko! It's all lo-tech and shit! Freaky-deaky!

“They were lovers of peace,” Gaudior replied shortly. “Your planet does not deal gently with lovers of peace.” (Madeleine L’Engle, from A Swiftly Tilting Planet)

Oh, G-Mozz ... I want so much to love your Batman work! That blood is really going to mess up that puzzle! Ten for ten in great covers! Why can't they just get along? She must have had butt implants or something! Well, this is a misleading cover! I love this series more each issue! Sigh - this has been fun It's a MANLY hug! It's all fun and game until ... well, you know I sure hope there's violence and nudity in this! Who names their kid 'Shadrach'? I mean, really?

What I bought – 8 July 2010

Actually, his statement in its entirety was, “The rich are the most discriminated-against minority in the world. Openly or covertly, everybody hates the rich because, openly or covertly, everybody envies the rich. Me, I love the rich. Somebody has to love them. Sure, a lot o’ rich people are assholes, but believe me, a lot o’ poor people are assholes, too, and an asshole with money can at least pay for his own drinks.” (Tom Robbins, from Jitterbug Perfume)

Damn, I love the backgrounds on these Quitely covers! Batman puts some Bactine on this and moves on, because he's tougher than you are! It's a double-shot of awesome straight to your cerebral cortex! I don't know how those dolphins got on top of that building, but how sad! That guy in the foreground creeps me out! I love the ghost fingers right in the center of the drawing! You know, if more cops looked like this and flew around like this, I'd be a criminal just to check it out! How can anyone not love Tom Scioli? I'd risk the arrows if fine ladies like that were paying me so much attention! I wonder what this issue is about? She will tic-tac-toe your ass to death! Yay! More nudity! That's kind of a lousy 'drawing' but a pretty effective image It just keeps getting weirder! Featuring ... SCIENCE!!!! I'm so geeked about this title! Is it the end? We shall see ... Raise a glass to Christopher Mitten! This actually represents something that happens within the pages! Who doesn't love retellings of old fairy tales?

For it is a general rule of human nature that people despise those who treat them well and look up to those who make no concessions. (Thucydides, from History of the Peloponnesian War)

This is the much better of two covers! Man, that leg shouldn't bend that way, should it? He got punched so hard math came out of his mouth! At least it's not called Mouthbreather! Dig that crazy cover, man! You don't want to see that in the middle of the blizzard! There's a light snack! Lawrence of Arabia does not appear too often in this book, but he gets the cover! How adorable! Colin Ferrell likes his penis substitute! It just keeps getting freakier! Is this on life support? This series would be a lot better if this scene actually appeared in it! Well, this looks freakin' awesome! Even though the anatomy of this cover is somewhat strange, the interior works looks stupendous! This has Kelly Thompson written all over it! So does this, in fact!
