“Stories have no point if they don’t absorb our terror.” (Don DeLillo, from Mao II)

What are the odds of her falling down right in front of tiger graffiti???? This is a good cover because at first glance you might not notice how nasty it is! Man, that's busy It's back! ... and then, it's gone again No, that's not an Adam Hughes cover She fears ... the reader! Yeah, I have no idea what the crap is going on here Farewell, Pigs! Because that makes sense! Um, spoiler alert? Darwin really ought to pay attention to the giant floating wolf head behind him There really is a pretty decent in-story reason that we get to see that magnificent ass! I understood it this evening: the author has to die in order for the reader to become aware of his truth. (Umberto Eco, from Foucault’s Pendulum)

Hank couldn't shrink down for the damned class picture? That's a cheery pumpkin! The black bar cracks me up What's this?Could it be? Hey! It's Jesus! Holy crap, really? Wilson Fisk, NO!!! “Life is so embarrassing,” he said. “How I love it.” (Robert Boswell, from The Geography of Desire)

That doesn't seem like optimal killing-bad-guys clothing Does Kubrick know about this cover? He's double-fisting it! I think we need to give Campbell a break, because it's obvious he just can't help himself Jodhpurs! Vertiginous! No wonder everyone hated Lincoln - he shook with his left hand! Don't tell anyone that Wagner would be a better artist for this book! Fact: Nate Powell is awesome! It's BACK! The fact that Ditko is still alive and cranky makes me happy

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

“Am I ever going to be told what you really think you’re doing?”

“You have been told.”

“Lie upon lie.”

“Perhaps that’s our way of telling the truth.” But then, as if she knew she had smiled once too often, she looked down and added quickly, “Maurice once said to me – when I had just asked him a question rather like yours – he said, ‘An answer is always a form of death.’ ” (John Fowles, from The Magus)

So many faces! I don't know how Stephanie is doing that, but man! that's a cool cover! It's all sharp points! Look - it's a random cover! Jihad Jones will take you out, man! Oh noes! How does it happen that sometimes someone says something and wins someone else over forever? … at times a single word can work miracles. (Manuel Puig, from Kiss of the Spider Woman)

Man, I hate when they use my body for comic book covers without my permission! Francavilla drew this cover in 2010 - how long has he known he'll be doing this issue? Bwah-ha-ha-ha! Just to reassure you - that's not a penis Oh, Amanda Conner - is there anything you can't do? Symbolism! It's like she's shooting YOU!!!! Yeah, this won't end well Big 'n' spooky! Why does he have a fishing pole? Dear God, WHY?!?!?!? Hells yeah!
