What I bought – 14 September 2011

To know you do not know is to know a great deal.

Wisdom consists in knowing there is no such thing. (Joseph Heller, from Picture This)

So noiry! So boring! So depressed! So busty! So anti-American! So twisty! So 'sepia-toned'! So disappointing!

What I bought – 10 August 2011

By the river. She was standing by the river. She was dancing without moving. By the river. She wasn’t beautiful exactly; she was like a shimmer in the distance. She was so white his reservation eyes suffered. (Sherman Alexie, from “All I Wanted to do Was Dance”)

Dustin Nguyen is soooooo awesome Oh, the temptation! That can't be feminist-friendly! It's TABOO! This cover would be much better if they put a POW! on it Tony doesn't forge a sword in this comic, which is a damned shame Why isn't Franken-chick green on this cover? SCORE! Look, it's a boomerang pun! I'll get it out of the way in the alt-text: TIME TRAVEL IS IMPOSSIBLE! More good Kordey art for the haters! Bolland! Gracia-Lopez! Russell! Holy crap!!!!!! More Fiona Staples goodness! You cannot deny Risso's excellence! So many phallic symbols! Horrific violence in Gantz? Unprecedented! Why should I read it for free when I can buy it? Holy crap, this looks awesome Spies!!!!!

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

What I bought – 10 March 2010

It was the smell of death and destruction and it smelled fresh and lively and hopeful. (A. S. Byatt, from Possession)

Hey, this scene is actually in the book! Oh, Tracy, you sure can take a punch! Is this part of a triptych or something? You know, if she wanted to torture me, I'm not sure I'd object! So much rage! Best cover of the year so far? Swirly! Does Chris Sims know about this cover? Yet more Tardi!

What I bought – 3 February 2010

Turkish influence would have been better for Georgia than Russian influence, because Atatürk took a backward Turkey and made it modern, while Lenin and Stalin took a directionless Russia and made it backward. (Robert Kaplan, from Eastward to Tartary)

Oh, Tracy, you crazy fool! I love this cover Subliminal sexual imagery? Check! Well, that can't end well ... Only the first Zorro book this week! More Zorro than you can handle!

What I bought – 23 December 2009

Ah, villains, hath that Mortimer escap’d?
With him is Edmund gone associate?
And will Sir John of Hainault lead the round?
Welcome, o’ God’s name, madam, and your son!
England shall welcome you and all your rout.
Gallop apace, bright Phoebus, through the sky;
And, dusky Night, in rusty iron car,
Between you both shorten the time, I pray,
That I may see that most desired day,
When we may meet these traitors in the field!
Ah, nothing grieves me, but my little boy
Is thus misled to countenance their ills!
Come, friends, to Bristow, there to make us strong:
And, winds, as equal be to bring them in,
As you injurious were to bear them forth!

Pugs is kind of a dick, isn't he? The Black Coat is quite the propagandist! All rats should wear monocles - it really classes them up! Well, now I'm going to have to track down some Korean noir, confound it! I wish Helena was always this cool. I'm really not sure how Sahara's breasts stay covered up ... Alan Davis: Best illustrator of smiles EVER! How will Amadeus resist Delphyne now???? I love the zombie fish on that cover This cover format really screws with some nice Cheung covers So instead, she makes new mistakes! Another cool cover by Johnson! Who's going to turn down tequila? I already own every issue, but this has new material, dang it! This is the first Sacco book I've ever bought - I hope it's good! Sterankoriffic! Pure. Concentrated. Awesome. Dixon and Zaffino wrote one of the few Punisher stories I like, so I'm keen to read this!

What I bought – 25 November 2009

I remember when I was in love, I broke my sword upon a stone, and bid him take that for coming a-night to Jane Smile; and I remember the kissing of her batler and the cow’s dugs that her pretty chopp’d hands had milk’d; and I remember the wooing of a peascod instead of her, from whom I took two cods, and giving her them again, said with weeping tears, “Wear these for my sake.” We that are true lovers run into strange capers; but as all is mortal in nature, so is all nature in love mortal in folly.

Kitties in love! Hey, I'd freak out if my partner did that too! Can you handle all the awesome? The Steward kicks ass and takes names! Oh, forbidden love - it gets you every time! Aren't all Mossad agents built like that? Who doesn't love sandwiches? Moore doesn't follow Chekov's 'Orgy Rule'! It's Cassaday! Can you resist? 'He really likes beer.' Bwah-ha-ha-ha! Warning: This hot chick does not appear in this comic! Yes, she's resting her drink on a headless guy's ass. Why? because Darwyn Cooke is awesome, that's why! Dang, that's a cool cover! For all his prominence on the cover, Thor doesn't actually appear in this comic. 'Remove Before Takeoff' cracked me up, I must admit. Yes, he really does drink blood in this issue!

I didn’t buy all of these – two were sent to me – but dang, that’s a grip of funnybooks, ain’t it?
