“That’s one of the Devil’s main tricks, of course. Fill a man with faith. What evils, what absolute horrors the noble sword of faith sends pouring into the world!” (John Gardner, from Freddy’s Book)

“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” (Italo Calvino, from Invisible Cities)

So much looming! NAZIS!!!! Oh nos! Will he ever give up the ciggies? Not sold in Germany! Why, Rogue, why? Wockijika-wockijika-wockijika! Old-school! Freaky-deaky! Is he married? Ka-Boom! What I bought – 21 March 2012

And so I stood perfectly still with folded arms, allowing my eyes to receive the tracery of apian flight, so like curling silver strings in the air. White butterflies, faint as powder on a mirror, yet imbued with the mysterious force of life, hovered and flitted, half-powered by their own efforts and half-carried by the breeze. That all these creatures, and all these plants and dirt and blossoms, from the earthworms to the dung beetles, to the rhododendrons, catnip, delphinium, clematis, lupine, campanula, and bearded iris should all come together here in this spot to create this wondrous place seemed a fact beyond all possibility of mere formality, betokening some kind of marvelous presence having the sense of an artist and the mechanical persistence of an inventor. (Steve Szilagyi, from Photographing Fairies)

I'd vote for him! She doesn't look happy! She has no head! Poor Jason Blood! Cliff is looking at himself! J'accuse! Toby has that fancy helmet, but he's using a gun? What an odd pin-up calendar! Boing! That has to get in the way, doesn't it? Good comix! It's WEE!

What I bought – 22 February 2012

“There were little white puffs of clouds all across it, like a cat stepped in milk and then walked across the blue. I thought it was so beautiful I told Dmetro about it. He just stared at me. ‘I ain’t looked at the sky in ten years,’ he said.” (W. P. Kinsella, from The Iowa Baseball Confederacy)

Oh no, it's HAL! Well, that's a lying cover Chocolatey! Wait, a spooky Mignola drawing?!?!? He should go with the flow, man! Gleefully violent! The light! It burnsssss!!!!! What I bought – 24 January and 1 February 2012

Despair and idleness are, I think, the chief motives for religious devotion. When we have nothing on earth to do or hope for we gaze at the sky. We kiss the holy ikons because we have nothing better to kiss. (Lawrence Durrell, from Pope Joan)

Why the doves? Why? Ryan Sook should do more interiors! So much anger! She's thinking, 'You're going to draw me naked, aren't you, Milo?' More Nate Powell art! Um ... Reptil's not green She may be sad, but she has nice shoes! They look awfully suspicious, don't they? Wouldn't that take his jaw clean off? Well, that's a cool cover!

What I bought – 21 December 2011

Was the rise of the radical intelligentsia desirable, was their unchecked progress necessary in order that mankind might be led to the broad uplands of democratic freedom? Or was the very concept of democratic freedom a blind alley, developed to make the world safe for an intelligentsia which is only happy when playing at politics, at no matter what cost in suffering to the multitude? (Edward Crankshaw, from The Fall of the House of Habsburg)

The God of All Comics is back, baby! Man, Chaykin is pretty terrible these days, isn't he? Dang, that's a cool cover John doesn't actually go to New York in this comic Brereton + Roman history = AWESOME! Well, I mean, maybe he should move away from Death Way to give away the game, DC So much RAGE! Now THAT'S funny! With Sergio Aragones?!?!? Well, that has to suck She actually wears that hat in this comic! Omnibi rule, man!

What I bought – 23 November 2011

He had built empires of scientific capability to manipulate the phenomena of nature into enormous manifestations of his own dreams of power and wealth – but for this he had exchanged an empire of understanding of equal magnitude: an understanding of what it is to be a part of the world, and not an enemy of it. (Robert M. Pirsig, from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance)

Dang, that's a cool cover John is all kinds of rock 'n' roll I bet Red Crow didn't see THAT coming! If only there was a big explosion in the background! Nobody wins when you fight yourself! I'm liking this wait-for-the-trade thing! Fancy!

What I bought – 19 October 2011

My granddaughter Andrea wrote a composition for school in which she said that she liked her “grandmother’s imagination.” I asked her what she was referring to, and without hesitation she replied, “You remember things that never happened.” Don’t we all do that? (Isabel Allende, from My Invented Country)

This is why you shouldn't take walks in the snow! This is why you shouldn't go into space! This is why you shouldn't send an android into space! This is why you shouldn't let other winds into your castle! This is why you shouldn't do big events! This is why Hope should use conditioner! This is why John should wear clothes! This is why you shouldn't swear off killing! This is why you shouldn't fly through wormholes! This is why you shouldn't cancel the title, because Greg Land is the final artist of Uncanny X-Men! This is why you shouldn't unzip your costume! This is why you should talk to your son! This is why you shouldn't make shit up when you're kids! This is why you should work out that booty! This is why you should read Warren Ellis comics! Yep. Still insane.

What I bought – 21 September 2011

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

What I bought – 24 August 2011

“Nevetheless, you’ll have to reconcile yourself to the fact that I am,” retorted Woland with a twisted smile. “No sooner do you appear on the roof than you blab nonsense, and I’ll tell you what it is – it’s in your intonation. You pronounced your words as if you refuse to acknowledge the existence of either shadows or evil. But would you kindly ponder this question: What would your good do if evil didn’t exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared? After all, shadows are cast by things and people. Here is the shadow of my sword. But shadows also come from trees and from living things. Do you want to strip the earth of all trees and living things just because of your fantasy of enjoying naked light? You’re stupid.” (Mikhail Bulgakov, from The Master and Margarita)

Digitaley! The holy egg! It's so busy! Don't tase me, bro! He's gotta sing! he's gotta dance! Tim Callahan likes this - shouldn't you? Man, that's a lazy cover I'm not sure why this cover is on this issue and not the last one No, Kid Miracleman, no! This comic is Ian Astbury's wet dream No chicks in a Greg Horn cover? Sacrilege! It's all wacky! Who knows where the heck this is going? Giant chunks of Hellboy-related material is the best way to read it! But ... it's not infinite, is it? It's all Caniffy!

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

What I bought – 20 April 2011

For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge. (Caleb Carr, from Killing Time)

We're already referencing the first issue's cover? Really? He takes no shit! Don't look too closely at her crotch! I said DON'T LOOK!!!!! Yep - still terrible! I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!
