What I bought – 30 November 2011

“Maybe I’m crazy. But there’s something in me that loves Death. I think of myself as Death, sometimes. In a scarlet shroud, floating through the night. I’m so beautiful, then. And sad. And hungry to make the whole world happy, by taking them out where I am, into the night, away from all trouble, all unhappiness … Walter, this is the awful part. I know this is terrible. I tell myself it’s terrible. But to me, it doesn’t seem terrible. It seems as though I’m doing something – that’s really best for him, if he only knew it. Do you understand me, Walter?”

“No.” (James M. Cain, from Double Indemnity)

There is no DeLorean in this book! Monkey-hanging is F-U-N! Dang, I love this cover Don't fuck with ...... the ferrets! Not a hoax! Not an imaginary issue! So much rage! If it's Shinku, there's going to be blood! What strange hold does Nick Spencer have on editors?!?!? Mouth-spanning saliva!!!! So much death! Hey, look! It came out! It's Arthur Adams all over the place! Finally! Can you stand all the Gillen?

My granddaughter Andrea wrote a composition for school in which she said that she liked her “grandmother’s imagination.” I asked her what she was referring to, and without hesitation she replied, “You remember things that never happened.” Don’t we all do that? (Isabel Allende, from My Invented Country)

This is why you shouldn't take walks in the snow! This is why you shouldn't go into space! This is why you shouldn't send an android into space! This is why you shouldn't let other winds into your castle! This is why you shouldn't do big events! This is why Hope should use conditioner! This is why John should wear clothes! This is why you shouldn't swear off killing! This is why you shouldn't fly through wormholes! This is why you shouldn't cancel the title, because Greg Land is the final artist of Uncanny X-Men! This is why you shouldn't unzip your costume! This is why you should talk to your son! This is why you shouldn't make shit up when you're kids! This is why you should work out that booty! This is why you should read Warren Ellis comics! Yep. Still insane.

What I bought – 21 September 2011

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

dearest abbie who told me that in a sick society a symbol will always become a commodity (Tommy Trantino, from Lock the Lock)

Everyone out of the pool! It's not as bad as it looks Shit hits the fan! Just your standard excellent Fables cover! You mean people with different colored eyes are ... mutants?!?!? Wait, something unpleasant going on in a John Constantine comic? Alert the media! Visual Hamlet puns never go out of fashion! Simon looks pretty smug This is a bit generic, but it's better than the last few So many O-faces! I'm guessing nursing is out of the question? You can't go wrong with a machete! It's in landscape! Dayum!

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge. (Caleb Carr, from Killing Time)

We're already referencing the first issue's cover? Really? He takes no shit! Don't look too closely at her crotch! I said DON'T LOOK!!!!! Yep - still terrible! I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!

Committed: Neonomicon, Hellblazer & Fables… NSFW?

For some reason I always thought I was immune to that whole “Not Safe For Work” thing people always squeal about. It isn’t that I’m completely shameless, but I really don’t care what my co-workers see me looking at online (excluding, of course, the horrible body modification links that Warren Ellis used to post.) Turns out I do have a sense of shame and it isn’t about the MAX or whatever R-rated comics there are, it is about the relatively cute one.

What I bought – 23 March 2011

“Fuck what is written,” Landsman says. “You know what?” All at once he feels weary of ganefs and prophets, guns and sacrifices and the infinite gangster weight of God. He’s tired of hearing about the promised land and the inevitable bloodshed required for its redemption. “I don’t care what is written. I don’t care what supposedly got promised to some sandal-wearing idiot whose claim to fame is that he was ready to cut his own son’s throat for the sake of a hare-brained idea. I don’t care about red heifers and patriarchs and locusts. A bunch of old bones in the sand. My homeland is in my hat. It’s in my ex-wife’s tote bag.”

He sits down. He lights another cigarette.

“Fuck you,” Landsman concludes. “And fuck Jesus, too, he was a pussy.” (Michael Chabon, from The Yiddish Policemen’s Union)

I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with the American flag Look, it's all Clark Kent-y! Everyone wants a thumb! Lorna doesn't spend much time in the sewers in this issue, unfortunately Yes, it's still weird! Yes, it's still awesome! More Tardi! I'm giving it another try! Best title of the week! It's all high-falutin'!

She didn’t realize that it was in the blood and not on the skin; she didn’t see that there could be nothing more suburban than suburbanites repudiating themselves. (Hanif Kureishi, from The Buddha of Suburbia)

I don't know what those things on the sides of her legs are, but I wish they'd tell us! The name of this issue is NOT 'Time's Up'! I don't know what those letters next to the creators' names are The cover is the best thing about this issue! Why so many versions of Ozma? Such an unimportant part of the issue is depicted on this cover! I wish I could blow smoke like that! Don't taunt us with a Bradstreet cover! Spooooooky! I need me to get a tattoo on the back of my hand so I can freak people out! I love this cover! So, yeah, Dustin Nguyen is pretty good Hyperion looks really odd on that cover Let's give it another try! Who doesn't love the bleak stuff?

Committed: The Drug User’s Comic Reading List

Haven’t you ever wondered which comic books will enhance your life-threatening drug use? Apparently, some of my friends tell me that they read specific comic books only when they are drunk or high, deeming the content to be appropriate for consumption exclusively in an altered state. What I bought – 26 January 2011

For if the sun is at the center and not the earth, then there are no crystal spheres to hold us in; we have only and always fooled ourselves, we men, kept ourselves within the spheres which our own flawed and insufficient senses perceived, but which were never there at all. The way to ascend through the spheres that hem us in was to know that we had already so ascended, and were on our way, in motion unstoppably. (John Crowley, from Aegypt)

I hid the Totally Random Hottie link somewhere. Can you find it? Time for monkeyshines! Darick Robertson draws all good and shit Hot damn, Jock is awesome What? A scene from the comic on the cover? That simply is not done! Greg Land's worst quality? His blandness Old school, baby! So much freakiness! He's definitely gotten better, but this is still cool-looking I've been waiting ...

Committed: 33 Comic Books I Read in 2010

If miracles have been so rare since the appearance of Christianity, the blame rests not on Christianity but on Christians. (Mircea Eliade, from The Myth of the Eternal Return)

It's all emotional and shit! He's a manly man! That shore is purty! Three-Deeee! That can't be pleasant 'Why am I wearing this ridiculous outfit?!?!?!?' he screams If only Superboy had looked at the cover of his own comic! Does Thor look like he's in the mood to be dogpiled? All superheroes should wear ties! Too much Bat-grooviness! Gulacy gets to draw nekkid wimmins!

What can be broken, should be broken. (Dimitri Pisarev, 1840-1868)

The world would be a lot cooler if they swore in the president like this ... costumes included, of course I used to really like Brandon Peterson's art ... now it kind of freaks me out I like that you can see his ribs God forbid he lose his cigarette! She should really be looking more closely at what she's doing Oh, Darwyn Cooke - you're so groovy! Becky kicks ass! Nice of them to deliver it to the West Coast, ain't it? Squeed looks like he's doing some kind of funky boogie This seems like it's an homage, but I'm not sure what it's referencing Yes, please! That worm-thing on the cover is brought to you by a Mr. Steve Ditko! It's all lo-tech and shit! Freaky-deaky!
