GodlandFinale (2)

It was not the sufferings of the maimed and the dead that pained him, but the very absence of that pain; he could not forget those terrible scenes, the blood and mud, the bundles of squirming flesh, but, remembering, he felt nothing, nothing, and this emptiness horrified him. (John Banville, from Doctor Copernicus)

What I bought – Special Emerald City Comic Con edition!

I bought a bunch of big comics in Seattle last weekend, but I also got several single issues, so I thought I’d review them all in one post. You know you love reviews of obscure, self-published comics! Yes you do!

Jeez, Southworth, put some effort into the cover! Look at the adorable little green Nazis! That dude should be a little more careful with that sword Prospecting for sexy miner butt, amirite? He's calling about ... a murder!!!! That dude needs to chill It might be wise to stay awake!!! Why is the shadow of the lollipop red?

And I fervently believe that there will come a time when no one will be burned and no one beheaded; when the criminal will plead for death as a mercy and deliverance and death will be denied him, for life will serve as his punishment just as death does today; when there will be no senseless uniforms and rituals, no contracts and conditions binding feeling, no duties and responsibilities, and will shall yield to love alone, not to will; when there will be no husbands and wives, only lovers … (Vissarion Belinsky, from Letters to V. P. Botkin, 1840-1841)

Not the Mad Mod! She looks like she could use some aspirin! Not exactly germane to the story, but funny nevertheless! He has four fingers and five toes? It's just like The Running Man! The countdown continues! Blech Well, he's cheery So Joycean! I doubt if this is all that strange

What I bought – 21 and 28 July 2010

Society had tamed the erratic fellow by co-opting him into the mainstream. For its largest threats, society reserves success. (Richard Powers, from Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance)

Giant robot runs wild! Film at 11! Ride, Brucie, ride! There's more action on the cover than almost the entire book! That cover is just two panels from the book - couldn't they have spruced up the covers a bit? It's Jaime Hernandez!!!!! That cover doesn't make a lot of sense Continuing the grand tradition of cheesecakery!!!! Ka-Blooooey!!!!!! Man, Bisley is wacky! Buckingham is really doing a nice job on these covers Man, those pants are close to going down! You can practically hear the ringing of the hammer on steel! Who is this crazy snake bitch?!?!?!?! Cosmicky! So scary!!!! I love how the kid wants Thor to sign his copy of issue #1 Look at that wonderful cover! That can't bode well! Seriously with that cover? It's like he's leaping right at you!!!! I wish Brother Night was cooler, man! No good can come of this! Why does he have the stuff on his face? It's the Seventies, maaaaannnnn! It's all about the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, man! Who doesn't love the giant tiki statue with lightning-discharging eyes?!?!?!?

What I bought – 14 April 2010

You stay in prison, what your time calls duty, honor, self-respect, and you are comfortably safe. Or you are free and crucified. Your only companions the stones, the thorns, the turning backs; the silence of cities, and their hate. (John Fowles, from The French Lieutenant’s Woman)

Feel the burn! Now with 100% less Vampire Dimension! The over/under on number of issues this lasts is SIX! Yes, this scene actually appears in the comic itself! Man, I love all of these covers! Look at those dreamy pecs! Something is creepy about that cover, and I can't figure out what! Nothing subliminal to see here, folks! What did poor Will ever do to anyone? Rassum-frassum Cronin! If you don't like Mike Grell's art, you make Baby Jesus cry! Lousy ninjas! Nipples will strike you blind! He's gleefully nutty! Poor Pauly Bruckner!

What I bought – 6 January 2010

You don’t know exactly when you fall in love with someone, do you? There isn’t that sudden moment when the music stops and you look into one another’s eyes for the first time, or whatever. Well, maybe it’s like that for some people, but not me. I had a friend who told me she fell for a boy when she woke up in the morning and realized he didn’t snore. It doesn’t sound much, does it? Except it sounds true. (Julian Barnes, from Talking It Over)

Guns, boobs, and Nazis! What's not to love? So much potential! Better singer: Bob or Superman? Tits, yes, but God, no dick, please!!!! Man, comics in the Fifties had a lot of words! Incest: Keep it in the family! Yes, Portland parking tickets actually look like that, I can unfortunately testify. Can you really destroy the House of Secrets? I must say, that's a cool cover. Where's it been? I've missed it so!

What I bought – 9 December 2009

Ay, I pray, leave me in my patience. You, that
Were ne’er possess’d of wealth, are pleas’d with want.
But give him liberty at least to mourn,
That in a field, amidst his enemies,
Doth see his soldiers slain, himself disarm’d,
And know no means of recovery.
Ay, let me sorrow for this sudden chance;
‘Tis in the trouble of my spirit I speak:
Great injuries are not so soon forgot.

While I like this cover, it doesn't look a lot like Dan Brereton. A bit surprisingly, the Frazer Irving cover was not as good as this Dale Keown one. Has anyone referred to them as the Boys from Brazil? No? I'm a trendsetter! What? Nazi monsters, hot chicks, and bondage! Where's Kelly when we need her? If I could, I would buy fifty thousand of each issue just to make this financially viable! Why does she have a Batman logo on her arm? 'You owe me an eyeball'! Ah, Death's Head, you slay me! I love these covers! I thought I'd start posting the covers of collected stuff that I'm not going to review in this post just to let you know what's out there. And hey, this is ten bucks for a fancy hardcover. And hey, Our Dread Lord and Master is quoted on the dust jacket!

This week: Two books written by Phil Hester, two books written by Kieron Gillen, and THREE books colored by Matthew Wilson! Phew! Plus: Just to drive our pal Apodaca crazy, another installment of “Which song by a band that Dan hates is this comic?” But which band? See below!
