“Girls are like slugs – they probably serve some purpose, but it’s hard to imagine what.” (Calvin, of Calvin and Hobbes fame)

Marko mad!!!!! Is this cover supposed to be 3-D? Two consecutive issues of Dracula chained up - they need to mix it up! It's Soldier Ant! Onward to glorious Communist future, comrades! He's kicked ass, he's taken names, he's gotten laid ... it's been a good day! It's all Orson Wellesy! Yay, espionage! Oh no - this looks Goth-y! It's about bleepin' time!

What I bought – 25 August 2010

While we wait for chocolate malteds I notice a high-schooler sitting at the counter exchanging looks with the girl next to him. She’s gorgeous, and I’m not the only other one who notices it. The girl behind the counter waiting on them is also watching with an anger she thinks no one else sees. Some kind of triangle. We keep passing unseen through little moments of other people’s lives. (Robert M. Pirsig, from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance)

He's all loomy, man! How will she elude that bad guy falling out of her outfit like that? I actually liked this cover more than the Dan Brereton one, which surprised me More heroes than you can handle! Guns, guns, and more guns! I wish I had spooky red eyes! Oh, Dash - you're having so many problems! I'm not sure what Steve Rogers is doing in that cover - it looks like he's saying 'BOO' to Fury! This cover is misleading, man! Warning: This scene appears in this comic! Freaky-deaky! Freakier-deakier!!!!

Society had tamed the erratic fellow by co-opting him into the mainstream. For its largest threats, society reserves success. (Richard Powers, from Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance)

Giant robot runs wild! Film at 11! Ride, Brucie, ride! There's more action on the cover than almost the entire book! That cover is just two panels from the book - couldn't they have spruced up the covers a bit? It's Jaime Hernandez!!!!! That cover doesn't make a lot of sense Continuing the grand tradition of cheesecakery!!!! Ka-Blooooey!!!!!! Man, Bisley is wacky! Buckingham is really doing a nice job on these covers Man, those pants are close to going down! You can practically hear the ringing of the hammer on steel! Who is this crazy snake bitch?!?!?!?! Cosmicky! So scary!!!! I love how the kid wants Thor to sign his copy of issue #1 Look at that wonderful cover! That can't bode well! Seriously with that cover? It's like he's leaping right at you!!!! I wish Brother Night was cooler, man! No good can come of this! Why does he have the stuff on his face? It's the Seventies, maaaaannnnn! It's all about the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, man! Who doesn't love the giant tiki statue with lightning-discharging eyes?!?!?!?

“Concentration-camp existence … taught us that the whole world is really like a concentration camp,” wrote Tadeusz Borowski. “The weak work for the strong, and if they have no strength or will to work – then let them steal, or let them die. … There is no crime that a man will not commit in order to save himself. And, having saved himself, he will commit crimes for increasingly trivial reasons; he will commit them first out of duty, then from habit, and finally – for pleasure. … The world is ruled by neither justice nor morality; crime is not punished nor virtue rewarded, one is forgotten as quickly as the other. The world is ruled by power …” (Otto Friedrich, from The End of the World)

Sadly lacking in bottles of rum! Well, this title leaves no doubt about what's happening! Bruce is looking a little chunky on that cover! Yay! It's back! Francavilla really ought to mix up the layouts of the covers! Warning: This is the only time Jack appears in this comic! Once again ...... we get the story behind the cover! Yes, these aren't listed alphabetically, because of Mouse Guard's squareness and double-sidedness! Too much black! What's this? No giant white space on this cover? It's a Festivus Miracle! I'm not sure, but I think that '7' is just a little small There's a disturbing lack of Spoon in this issue I love how Rictor is running away like a scaredy-cat! Unfortunately, the actual comic does NOT feature Oscar Hempel's Merry-O-Nettes! Sam Kieth doing a book about Arkham Asylum? Yeah, I'll take that! Not unlike Picasso, Gantz has a blue phase

“That’s why opera is important, Baron. Because it’s realer than any play! A dramatic poet would have to put all those thoughts down one after another to represent this second of time. The composer can put them all down at once – and still make us hear each one of them. Astonishing device: a Vocal Quartet! … I tell you I want to write a finale lasting half an hour! A quartet becoming a quintet becoming a sextet. On and on, wider and wider – all sounds multiplying and rising together – and the together making a sound entirely new! … I bet you that’s how God hears the world. Millions of sounds ascending at once and mixing in His ear to become an unending music, unimaginable to us! That’s our job! That’s our job, we composers: to combine the inner minds of him and him and him, and her and her – the thoughts of chambermaids and Court Composers – and turn the audience into God.” (Peter Shaffer, from “Amadeus”)

Lots of cool covers in this series! Andy Kubert can sure draw a cover! I'm just not a fan of this kind of cover design! This isn't as good as the first cover, but it's still pretty good Hey, wait a minute - that bird is already dead! This cover got smudged, and now it's no longer MINT!!!!! Arrrgggghhhhh!!!!! I don't know who Philip Castle is So secret! So very secret! So very, very secret!!!!! I cross my sevens, because I'm so cool! More crazy than you can handle! I know it's not very manly, but the sound I make in my voice when a volume of this comes out is 'Squeee!' Nice to see it come out ... finally! The sound MarkAndrew makes when a new Kim Deitch book comes out is 'Squeee!'

“It took me some time to figure out that love is in the details. It’s in the books and records and the stereo and the convertible. Love is always in the details. And that’s where the pain is too.” (John Crowley, from Aegypt)

Soraya isn't really the star of the book, but you never pass up a chance to put a hot chick on the cover! He uses that gun to swat insects. True! This is only the start of the egg puns! Sue is actually on this cover ... you just can't see her! I already have this cover tattooed on my ass! Long may the mullet wave! Well, hello there! Where've you been? That cover is sure to please the ladies! Oh, Mouse Guard, why do you ever go away? 'It's your turn to pick up the tab!' 'The hell you say!' I'm not quite sure why Thomas Edison is on this cover, but whatever Every once in a while I have to bring up how very much I hate that trade dress When in doubt, put a stripper on the cover! Get funky, Nick! The entire cover is a synopsis of the interior, because Brian Hurtt is awesome! Why the hell does Blair Butler keep getting quoted on books? I love Johnson's cover designs! Boy, I really hope this book is back on track! It's for the kids! Also for the kids! Kids fighting Nazis? Definitely for the kids! Okay, I can't work in the kid theme ... just buy the original Super Spy AND this, together! Well, I checked this out briefly, and it definitely looks like it's for the kids!
