What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

What I bought – 20 April 2011

For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge. (Caleb Carr, from Killing Time)

We're already referencing the first issue's cover? Really? He takes no shit! Don't look too closely at her crotch! I said DON'T LOOK!!!!! Yep - still terrible! I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!

Committed: Neonomicon, Hellblazer & Fables… NSFW?

For some reason I always thought I was immune to that whole “Not Safe For Work” thing people always squeal about. It isn’t that I’m completely shameless, but I really don’t care what my co-workers see me looking at online (excluding, of course, the horrible body modification links that Warren Ellis used to post.) Turns out I do have a sense of shame and it isn’t about the MAX or whatever R-rated comics there are, it is about the relatively cute one.

What I bought – 23 March 2011

“Fuck what is written,” Landsman says. “You know what?” All at once he feels weary of ganefs and prophets, guns and sacrifices and the infinite gangster weight of God. He’s tired of hearing about the promised land and the inevitable bloodshed required for its redemption. “I don’t care what is written. I don’t care what supposedly got promised to some sandal-wearing idiot whose claim to fame is that he was ready to cut his own son’s throat for the sake of a hare-brained idea. I don’t care about red heifers and patriarchs and locusts. A bunch of old bones in the sand. My homeland is in my hat. It’s in my ex-wife’s tote bag.”

He sits down. He lights another cigarette.

“Fuck you,” Landsman concludes. “And fuck Jesus, too, he was a pussy.” (Michael Chabon, from The Yiddish Policemen’s Union)

I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with the American flag Look, it's all Clark Kent-y! Everyone wants a thumb! Lorna doesn't spend much time in the sewers in this issue, unfortunately Yes, it's still weird! Yes, it's still awesome! More Tardi! I'm giving it another try! Best title of the week! It's all high-falutin'!

Committed: Oxfam is a Good Comic Shop (?)

It turns out that Oxfam is a very good comic shop. This statement won’t be as surprising to American comic book readers as it was to me, but imagine that I just said Goodwill is a very good comic shop” because that’s basically what it is, the English version of Goodwill. Continue Reading »

What I bought – 16 February 2011

She didn’t realize that it was in the blood and not on the skin; she didn’t see that there could be nothing more suburban than suburbanites repudiating themselves. (Hanif Kureishi, from The Buddha of Suburbia)

I don't know what those things on the sides of her legs are, but I wish they'd tell us! The name of this issue is NOT 'Time's Up'! I don't know what those letters next to the creators' names are The cover is the best thing about this issue! Why so many versions of Ozma? Such an unimportant part of the issue is depicted on this cover! I wish I could blow smoke like that! Don't taunt us with a Bradstreet cover! Spooooooky! I need me to get a tattoo on the back of my hand so I can freak people out! I love this cover! So, yeah, Dustin Nguyen is pretty good Hyperion looks really odd on that cover Let's give it another try! Who doesn't love the bleak stuff?

Committed: Deadpool MAX – Doing It Wrong

With a Lapham/Baker Deadpool MAX, my expectations were high, but it is possible that someone mixed up the contracts. Hiring Kyle Baker to write Deadpool MAX with David Lapham to draw it would make so much sense. Instead Lapham shows that he is more than capable of writing some seriously nasty stuff, but his humor is distinctly mean-spirited and Baker’s art only compounds the misery.

Box of Comics: New Year’s Resolution Comics

For 2011, I’ve told myself to only buy masterpieces, or comics that are as good as I remember comics being when I was a kid. Reviews of such comics– under the cut!

What I bought – 19 January 2011

“Do you know what it is to throw a child in the air and catch it on a knife in front of its mother? To be tied to a burning log? To have your ass split with an axe so that you beg the Serbs, beg them, to shoot you in the head and they don’t?

“And they go to their church after. They go to their goddamn church. I have no words …”

Ismail shuddered. “There are things that are beyond evil, that you just can’t speak about.” (Robert Kaplan, from Balkan Ghosts)

Damn you, Blair Butler!!!! Everything on this cover takes place inside! So ... much ... symbolism! I love the snarky headline It's all spooky, man! Huh Yep Shouldn't she be rejecting the bourgeois notion of jewelry? Wait, how many more issues are there? Quick Draw McGraw he ain't More bad-assery! I dig me some Sherlock Holmes!

Committed: 33 Comic Books I Read in 2010

People do a lot of year end reviews, but I never have. This week I was forced to confront a year of reading all at once when I decided to clear the growing pile of comic books next to my bed. Continue Reading »

What I bought – 22 December 2010

“You remember those birds that were getting sucked into the jet engines? Sometimes I lie in bed at three or four in the morning and I imagine myself flying miles above the earth, very cold, and one of those black secret spy planes is up there with the huge round engines with the spinning blades in it, the blades that look like the underside of mushrooms? The black plane’s going very fast and I’m going very fast in the opposite direction and we intersect, and I fly right through one of those jet engines, and I exit as this long fog of blood. I’m miles long, and, because it’s so cold, I’m crystalline. Very long arms, you’ll be pleased to hear. And then I recondense in bed, sshhp, as my short warm self. It must have something to do with my estrogen level. But that’s what telephone travel would be like out there, I think. What am I saying, that’s what it is like.” (Nicholson Baker, from Vox)

He's a friendly derring-doer! The hen takes one for the team! He's all rugged and handsome! I would have liked to check out the variant cover! Gene Ha's cover is the best thing about this book! More Bisley wackiness! It's like Odysseus and the sirens, sort of! Lightning makes everything more dramatic! Nick Spencer - master of self-promotion! Still awesome? Why yes, yes it is! Bullets, blood, and boobs! When Campbell does something like this, it looks trashy, but when Jusko does it, it looks heroic! It just keeps getting better!

What I bought – 17 November 2010

If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of those you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. (Ernest Hemingway, from A Farewell to Arms)

The chick on the cover looks NOTHING like the chick inside - it's two different artists, but come on! Gotta love the yellow oval! Do the Republicans know that Batman is selling us out to the United Nations? Why is the Russian girl a Rastafarian? He looks more like a dandy than a punk, doesn't he? Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!! A photo cover! Well, he doesn't look pleasant It's all dark and spooky!!!! What's she looking at? Is he moving? He's blurry! That hand needs to clutch that gun more securely, I reckon WTF? A Greg Land cover I don't hate? Has the world gone mad?!?!?!? Their dentists' bills must be astronomical! Why so very dark? Zombie Vikings!!!! Or are they Viking Zombies? More historical fiction! Yay! More Talbot goodness! Secret societies RULE! Alternate dimensions RULE!

What I bought – 20 October 2010

What can be broken, should be broken. (Dimitri Pisarev, 1840-1868)

The world would be a lot cooler if they swore in the president like this ... costumes included, of course I used to really like Brandon Peterson's art ... now it kind of freaks me out I like that you can see his ribs God forbid he lose his cigarette! She should really be looking more closely at what she's doing Oh, Darwyn Cooke - you're so groovy! Becky kicks ass! Nice of them to deliver it to the West Coast, ain't it? Squeed looks like he's doing some kind of funky boogie This seems like it's an homage, but I'm not sure what it's referencing Yes, please! That worm-thing on the cover is brought to you by a Mr. Steve Ditko! It's all lo-tech and shit! Freaky-deaky!

What I bought – 15 September 2010

“I’d like to change the world, but I end up as entertainment. Whereas all you lovers” — he spoke the word contemptuously — “who couldn’t give a fuck about the world as long as you’re feeling passionate, you’re the ones who make the cities burn and the nations tumble. You’re the engines in the tragedy, and most of the time you don’t even know it.” (Clive Barker, from Imajica)

Young people - they can't stop the texting! Hey! It's back! A scene from the comic on the cover? Uncanny! Don't fuck with the albino women!!!! Oh, Nazis - you're always there for us! Man, I love these covers! More creepiness!!!! Why has Longshot never visited Las Vegas before?!?!? Man, I love this title! It's a story about plastic surgery!
