What I bought – 12 September 2012

He was mingling with people who treated human flesh as pigment, life and death as a canvas, the human spine as an easel, and he could not for the life of him look away from it with all of his being: with most of it, yes, but not with the peeping bit of him. (Paul West*, from The Women of Whitechapel and Jack the Ripper)

This is one of the best covers of the year so far There is nothing not awesome about this! You will conform, comrade! Cal's slacks look awfully fancy What is this strange artifact? Iconic! Hey, look, it's back! Oh my dear sweet Jeebus I'm quoted on the back of this book, so you know it's awesome! Come on, son, you don't hold your weapon like that! The last two Season One books have at least LOOKED phenomenal Clones! They're everywhere! I can't stay mad at DC when they drop shit like this on us!

What I bought – 14 December 2011

“Truth, Vinicius, dwells somewhere so high that the gods themselves cannot see it from the top of Olympus. To you, carissime, your Olympus seems higher still, and, standing there, you call to me, ‘Come, you will see such sights as you have not seen yet!’ I might. But I answer, ‘I do not have feet for the journey.’ And if you read this letter to the end, you will acknowledge, I think, that I am right.” (Henryk Sienkiewicz, from Quo Vadis)

Yeeeee-hawwwww! Oh no, it's a fastball special! He's on the rag (yes, I totally went there) A hook hand! A HOOK HAND!!!!! I'm not entirely sure what that big ball of cash is - a wreath, maybe? I know this isn't supposed to be a cover, but it's still uninspiring Well, it might be ridiculously late, but at least the cover is spooky! The dude with the flame thrower cracks me up I'm not really sure why this image is being used as a cover for this issue It's about time! At least they fixed the trade dress! Who knew that motif was coming? Leonardo DiCaprio NOOOOOO! That's some good use of color there It never gets boring! At last! This looks groovy! Will this book make me like Satrapi???? Oh, Jubilee - what have they done to you?

What I bought – 13 July 2011

What a bore it is, waking up in the morning always the same person. (Jeremy Leven, from Creator)

Dustin Nguyen is pretty damned awesome I don't know what's going on with that face on the wall I have absolutely nothing to say about this cover Oh, you shifty Gordons! I usually like Mahnke, but I don't like Elsa's breasts on that cover FROOOOGGGGGGSSSSS! Look, he's all depressed! Man, she's just bad news! I have no idea what's going on in this cover He's kicking ass and taking names I wonder if Kelly read this White backgrounds are keen! I have no clue what's happening here Yes, there's a lot of blood in this issue Action! It's Mignolariffic! I want to read this right now, but I must wait!

What I bought – 6 April 2011

A young girl, a frailty, simple and true, who had been unable to stand up from the piano and had had to be carried; a girl half his age; a girl who could not shoot a gun, had never been in an oyster house, atop a tower, or under the wharves; a girl hotter always than noon in August; a girl who knew nothing; had thrown him so hard that he would be out of breath forever. (Mark Helprin, from Winter’s Tale)

I know I'd be surprised if I found a tiny woman in my whiskey! You can't hide from the boobies! Well, I wouldn't want to see him coming out of the night at me, I'll tell you what My daughters could design a better trade dress than that! I miss Amadeus already! Auf wiedersehen, Misty! This cover doesn't even pretend to have anything to do with the interiors! That won't end well TOTALLY worth the wait! I have no idea why the cat doll is on this cover I'm back on board, baby! I'm digging the different colors on each cover! That's gotta hurt! Full of piratical goodness!

She didn’t realize that it was in the blood and not on the skin; she didn’t see that there could be nothing more suburban than suburbanites repudiating themselves. (Hanif Kureishi, from The Buddha of Suburbia)

I don't know what those things on the sides of her legs are, but I wish they'd tell us! The name of this issue is NOT 'Time's Up'! I don't know what those letters next to the creators' names are The cover is the best thing about this issue! Why so many versions of Ozma? Such an unimportant part of the issue is depicted on this cover! I wish I could blow smoke like that! Don't taunt us with a Bradstreet cover! Spooooooky! I need me to get a tattoo on the back of my hand so I can freak people out! I love this cover! So, yeah, Dustin Nguyen is pretty good Hyperion looks really odd on that cover Let's give it another try! Who doesn't love the bleak stuff?

What I bought – 19 January 2011

“Do you know what it is to throw a child in the air and catch it on a knife in front of its mother? To be tied to a burning log? To have your ass split with an axe so that you beg the Serbs, beg them, to shoot you in the head and they don’t?

“And they go to their church after. They go to their goddamn church. I have no words …”

Ismail shuddered. “There are things that are beyond evil, that you just can’t speak about.” (Robert Kaplan, from Balkan Ghosts)

Damn you, Blair Butler!!!! Everything on this cover takes place inside! So ... much ... symbolism! I love the snarky headline It's all spooky, man! Huh Yep Shouldn't she be rejecting the bourgeois notion of jewelry? Wait, how many more issues are there? Quick Draw McGraw he ain't More bad-assery! I dig me some Sherlock Holmes!
