“An empire that can provide a prince, one who might end up succeeding to the throne, a life of childish foolishness and happiness until the age of twenty-nine is necessarily doomed to collapse, dissolution, and annihilation.” (Orhan Pamuk, from The Black Book)

‘We are happy lovers. Aren’t we? And happiness makes one stupid. Happiness and wisdom do not go together, just as body and thought do not go together. Because only pain is the thought of the body. In other words, happy people become stupid people. It is only when they get tired of their happiness that lovers can become wise again, if that is what they otherwise are.’ (Milorad Pavić, from Last Love in Constantinople)

And I fervently believe that there will come a time when no one will be burned and no one beheaded; when the criminal will plead for death as a mercy and deliverance and death will be denied him, for life will serve as his punishment just as death does today; when there will be no senseless uniforms and rituals, no contracts and conditions binding feeling, no duties and responsibilities, and will shall yield to love alone, not to will; when there will be no husbands and wives, only lovers … (Vissarion Belinsky, from Letters to V. P. Botkin, 1840-1841)

‘Once giants walked the earth,’ she repeated, emphatically. ‘Yes, titans absolutely, it’s a fact.’

Three mothers creaked and swung with expressions of fascinated absorption upon their smiling faces; but Raza Hyder took no notice, closed his eyes, grunted from time to time. ‘Now the pygmies have taken over, however,’ Bilquis confided. ‘Tiny personages. Ants. Once he was a giant,’ she jerked a thumb in the direction of her somnolent husband, ‘you would not believe to look, but he was. Streets where he walked shook with fear and respect, even here, in this very town. But, you see, even a giant can be pygmified, and he has shrunk now, he is smaller than a bug. Pygmies pygmies everywhere, also insects and ants – shame on the giants, isn’t it? Shame on them for shrinking. That’s my opinion.’ (Salman Rushdie, from Shame)

It's certainly an interesting trade dress Holy crapola He's totally going to pass out This looks like half of a complete picture, doesn't it? It's a not-cover cover! But novelists write for countless reasons: for money, for fame, for reviewers, for parents, for friends, for loved ones; for vanity, for pride, for curiosity, for amusement: as skilled furniture makers enjoy making furniture, as drunkards like drinking, as judges like judging, as Sicilians like emptying a shotgun into an enemy’s back. I could fill a box with reasons, and they would all be true, though not true of all. Only one same reason is shared by all of us: we wish to create as real as, but other than the world that is. (John Fowles, from The French Lieutenant’s Woman)

Yes, Glenn Fabry drew this in 2005! I'm not sure what's going on with Williams' obsession with X-rays in this issue Kalvachev does some nice covers for this series, I'll tell you what Man, talk about zipping along! This could get messy He's just a dude who likes his vodka and milk, man! 'Nuff said! Well, holy crap He's auditioning for Flashdance! So sad it's over! Who doesn't love evil Boy Scouts?

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

“Nevetheless, you’ll have to reconcile yourself to the fact that I am,” retorted Woland with a twisted smile. “No sooner do you appear on the roof than you blab nonsense, and I’ll tell you what it is – it’s in your intonation. You pronounced your words as if you refuse to acknowledge the existence of either shadows or evil. But would you kindly ponder this question: What would your good do if evil didn’t exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared? After all, shadows are cast by things and people. Here is the shadow of my sword. But shadows also come from trees and from living things. Do you want to strip the earth of all trees and living things just because of your fantasy of enjoying naked light? You’re stupid.” (Mikhail Bulgakov, from The Master and Margarita)

Digitaley! The holy egg! It's so busy! Don't tase me, bro! He's gotta sing! he's gotta dance! Tim Callahan likes this - shouldn't you? Man, that's a lazy cover I'm not sure why this cover is on this issue and not the last one No, Kid Miracleman, no! This comic is Ian Astbury's wet dream No chicks in a Greg Horn cover? Sacrilege! It's all wacky! Who knows where the heck this is going? Giant chunks of Hellboy-related material is the best way to read it! But ... it's not infinite, is it? It's all Caniffy!

“Am I ever going to be told what you really think you’re doing?”

“You have been told.”

“Lie upon lie.”

“Perhaps that’s our way of telling the truth.” But then, as if she knew she had smiled once too often, she looked down and added quickly, “Maurice once said to me – when I had just asked him a question rather like yours – he said, ‘An answer is always a form of death.’ ” (John Fowles, from The Magus)

So many faces! I don't know how Stephanie is doing that, but man! that's a cool cover! It's all sharp points! Look - it's a random cover! Jihad Jones will take you out, man! Oh noes!
