What I bought – 17 October 2012

Aliye’s death, and its echoes, had been stilled by the greater horror of this mother’s death, which burned inside him like a smothered coal in the silence there. But Aliye had started dying from the moment his mother told him that they were not to marry, in spite of the bey’s gracious visit, in spite of the fine carpet, in spite of the words he has whispered to Aliye and which he had thought were true words. He knew then how it must end for her, though his mother said it would be otherwise. He wished that there were one fixed thing in the world that would never change, or disappoint him, or leave him, but he did not know what that might be, unless it was the idea of God, which was a certitude without delight or consolation. (Starling Lawrence, from Montenegro)

Insects are icky! I've always suspected! More bad-ass than Glory herself? Even more joy! Kate Bishop FTW! John ain't care! It's back! He doesn't look happy! What the heck is Hyde doing? Kill the alien!!!! Nobody likes Jamie's stand-up comedy! It's even crazier inside! Stephanie Hans is pretty darned good Don't look at me! It's too big, captain! One more time!

What I bought – 25 July 2012

“It’s all right. Keep right on lying to me. That’s what I want you to do.” (Ernest Hemingway, from A Farewell To Arms)

That HAS to be a fire hazard! Time it takes her to braid her hair? Six hours! How nice! A bedtime story! Just when you think it can't get any more insane ... I should walk around with a toe tag on and freak people out Markham just enjoys ... hanging out Not a dream! Not a hoax! Is Clor praying? You'll be smarter after you read this ... trust me! The end is nigh! This better be worth it! Vampires will be slayed! Nazis will be slayed! Hot welding action!

As you might be able to figure out, there’s a NSFW panel below. No gold star for figuring out which comic it comes from! I just thought it would be better to tell you now!

What I bought – 2 December 2010

“I play with life, you say, and that is true, but I play because it pleases me; whereas Christian virtues would bore me in a day, as does the philosophy of Seneca. Because of this, Paul’s eloquence is displayed in vain. He should understand that people like me will never accept his religion. With your temperament you might either hate Christians or become a Christian immediately. I recognize, while yawning, the truth of what they say. We are mad. We are hastening to our doom, something unknown is coming toward us, something is dying around us – agreed! But life exists for itself alone, not for death.” (Henryk Sienkiewicz, from Quo Vadis)

With a Kim Basinger cameo! Yep - still icky Sixty percent of the people on this cover do NOT appear in this issue! Part six of six my ass! Well, that's charming! This looks even better than the first one! Eric Powell likes it! I hope this is Rob Schmidt-approved!

Sunday Brunch: 8/30/09

I asked for things more worthy of linkage, and the comics internet responded! Truly, I am King of the Intertubes.

Also, I like this QUESTION OF THE WEEK business, so I’ll try to keep this up. This week’s: Which comic character do you find completely uninteresting, no matter who writes or draws him/her? And (a two-parter!) what would make you change your mind about them?

Seven more days have passed us by, and it’s time for another foray into the series of tubes that is the comics internet! If you’re itching for dumb puns and wordplay with lots of links to cool stuff, look no further!
