What I bought – 26 May 2010

“That’s why opera is important, Baron. Because it’s realer than any play! A dramatic poet would have to put all those thoughts down one after another to represent this second of time. The composer can put them all down at once – and still make us hear each one of them. Astonishing device: a Vocal Quartet! … I tell you I want to write a finale lasting half an hour! A quartet becoming a quintet becoming a sextet. On and on, wider and wider – all sounds multiplying and rising together – and the together making a sound entirely new! … I bet you that’s how God hears the world. Millions of sounds ascending at once and mixing in His ear to become an unending music, unimaginable to us! That’s our job! That’s our job, we composers: to combine the inner minds of him and him and him, and her and her – the thoughts of chambermaids and Court Composers – and turn the audience into God.” (Peter Shaffer, from “Amadeus”)

Lots of cool covers in this series! Andy Kubert can sure draw a cover! I'm just not a fan of this kind of cover design! This isn't as good as the first cover, but it's still pretty good Hey, wait a minute - that bird is already dead! This cover got smudged, and now it's no longer MINT!!!!! Arrrgggghhhhh!!!!! I don't know who Philip Castle is So secret! So very secret! So very, very secret!!!!! I cross my sevens, because I'm so cool! More crazy than you can handle! I know it's not very manly, but the sound I make in my voice when a volume of this comes out is 'Squeee!' Nice to see it come out ... finally! The sound MarkAndrew makes when a new Kim Deitch book comes out is 'Squeee!'

What I bought – 21 April 2010

“It is something so monstrous it is past sin and becomes necessity,” he said. (Greg Bear, from “Petra”)

Ramos' art veers between ugly and scary, I'll tell you that much! Marlo is the kind of girl who exists only in geeks' imaginations! Yeah, I'm as surprised as you are that I bought this! Oh, John, you crazy punk, you! That cover is so boring it almost puts me to sleep Gotta have a chick! Who's his tailor? The puns don't get any better inside! My vote is for this to be a new ongoing series It's only sort of part of the crossover, so I didn't have to skip it! Fine, fine comic strip excellence! It's Pope-tacular! Too insane for words! Don't resist the manga!

What I bought – 24 March 2010

The thousands stand and chant. Around them in the world, people ride escalators going up and sneak secret glances at the faces going down. People dangle teabags over hot water in white cups. Cars run silently on the autobahns, streaks of painted light. People sit at desks and stare at office walls. They smell their shirts and drop them in the hamper. People bind themselves into numbered seats and fly across time zones and high cirrus and deep night, knowing there is something they’ve forgotten to do.

The future belongs to crowds. (Don DeLillo, from Mao II)

Churilla really does nice covers for this book Why would crazed cannibals wear bibs? Are they that dainty? Seriously - all of the covers for this comic are gorgeous! Don't you just hate when you're trying to get the ketchup out, and you're hitting the bottom, and it just shoots out everywhere, and ... what's that? Oh, never mind. I love the tag above the title: 'They believed that he was still alive. Then again, they were out of their minds ...' I like how the snow forms little hats PG appears to be thinking that she should have just killed him It's all about the foreshadowing! You can't make me look at the strippers! Every cover should have dinosaurs on it somewhere, because dinosaurs make everything better! It's Swede-tastic! Supernatural detectives in the 1920s? Did you think I WOULDN'T buy this?

What I bought – 17 February 2010

“Beware of faking: people will believe you. People believe those who sell lotions that make lost hair grow back. They sense instinctively that the salesman is putting together truths that don’t go together, that he’s not being logical, that he’s not speaking in good faith. But they’ve been told that God is mysterious, unfathomable, so to them incoherence is the closest thing to God. The farfetched is the closest thing to a miracle.” (Umberto Eco, from Foucault’s Pendulum)

Remain Calm. Trust in Science. You just lost the edge to Giant-Gorilla-Man!!!!! Talk about an incongruous cover! Gotta love the recap page! Come on, MarkAndrew ... bring the hatred! Nudity! Animals with guns! A woman with a really big hammer! Charming cameltoe there!

What I bought – 20 January 2010

“They get a thrill here – that’s why they come. They take stupendous joy in the indignation and compassion they feel on account of these mangled stiffs; it’s their roller coaster. I know this,” he said, making a tragic incision across the abdomen of an adolescent girl, “and I’ll tell you why. Since I’m here all the time and take apart fifty of these things a day, I can’t feel for each and every one of them. I’m not God. I don’t have that much in me. The ladies’ aides and the social critics sense immediately that I couldn’t give a goddamn about all this inedible meat, and that’s just what they want. They know they’re better than the miserable bastards they try to help, but they really enjoy thinking that they’re better than the rest of us, who aren’t as ‘compassionate’ as they are.” He turned to Peter Lake again, and said, “You notice how often that very word escapes their lips. They use it like a cudgel. Beware.” (Mark Helprin, from Winter’s Tale)

It's Ramosian! I love this cover! Oh, John - are you thinking who you're going to screw over next? This is, unfortunately, worse than the Granov covers we've been getting recently! Well, I liked it! Those things should get their own zip codes, I swear! So they took out all the cannibals like that? Really? Man, that's, well ... see below!

What I bought – 16 December 2009

Now hang our bloody colours by Damascus,
Reflexing hues of blood upon their heads,
While they walk quivering on their city walls,
Half-dead for fear before they feel my wrath.
Then let us freely banquet, and carous
Full bowls of wine unto the god of war,
That means to fill your helmets full of gold,
And make Damascus’ spoils as rich to you
As was to Jason Colchos’ golden fleece.
And now, Bajazeth, hast thou any stomach?

I just love that cover. Part five of five? Existence abides, bitches! Why yes, those are dogs with human heads! Manga-riffic! Who else can they kill??? The title as part of a declaration? Gold! More claustrophobia than you can handle! Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on on that cover either. Frenchie: Kicking ass and kissing guys! Why so angry? And why are they standing under a freeway? Man, I love this series. I don't know about this volume, because I haven't read it yet, but the first five are awesome. Enjoy the issues that exist, because it's not coming back! With fancy new coloring!

Girl Fights: Three Female Superhero Comics Reviewed

Hey, a theme! I’m not letting that get away! Especially since I have never before bought (and may never again buy) three superhero comics starring two women, a woman who calls herself a girl, and a faceless zen Latina in the same week. Have to take advantage of that sort of thing. Continue Reading »

Why I Enjoyed Power Girl #4

Yeah, a third post in a row about this comic.

Anyway, beyond this working for me along the same general lines that Palmiotti and Conner’s Supergirl serial in Wednesday Comics does, there’s one thing about this issue that really stood out to me. Continue Reading »

What I bought – 22 and 29 July 2009

Two weeks of reviews! Normally I’d just skip last week’s haul, but what the hell. I’m sure the kids can look after themselves, right? I’ll try to keep the ones about last week’s books short, though. The operative word being “try.”
