What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

What a bore it is, waking up in the morning always the same person. (Jeremy Leven, from Creator)

Dustin Nguyen is pretty damned awesome I don't know what's going on with that face on the wall I have absolutely nothing to say about this cover Oh, you shifty Gordons! I usually like Mahnke, but I don't like Elsa's breasts on that cover FROOOOGGGGGGSSSSS! Look, he's all depressed! Man, she's just bad news! I have no idea what's going on in this cover He's kicking ass and taking names I wonder if Kelly read this White backgrounds are keen! What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

What I bought – 20 April 2011

For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge. (Caleb Carr, from Killing Time)

We're already referencing the first issue's cover? Really? He takes no shit! Don't look too closely at her crotch! I said DON'T LOOK!!!!! Yep - still terrible! I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!

“Am I ever going to be told what you really think you’re doing?”

“You have been told.”

“Lie upon lie.”

“Perhaps that’s our way of telling the truth.” But then, as if she knew she had smiled once too often, she looked down and added quickly, “Maurice once said to me – when I had just asked him a question rather like yours – he said, ‘An answer is always a form of death.’ ” (John Fowles, from The Magus)

So many faces! I don't know how Stephanie is doing that, but man! that's a cool cover! It's all sharp points! Look - it's a random cover! Jihad Jones will take you out, man! Oh noes! My cover is smudged! Let's pick on hipsters! That's not good for anyone! Just a flesh wound! Yay! Incest! Oh no you dint! Boy, that's exciting! So much kookiness! Strike a pose! There's no rain in this comic! Won't all that blood gunk up the gun? Blasting your way this April! So many elements! Oh, man, I'm not touching this sucker!

What I bought – 16 March 2011

For Vida, that moment was the beginning of happiness, and in that happiness, like some kind of disease, the beginning of her titanic jealousy, which stayed with her forever and finally drove her to her grave. Because one dies of happiness sooner than of misery. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

More free comics! I don't think Korvac can really throw a good punch when he's standing like that Things get even freakier! What's up with Hope's feet? That's what happens when you don't tie your shoes! I don't know what he's looking at! They just dig his threads, man! No, I didn't get the Brereton cover - you wanna make something of it? That's a pretty keen Manapul cover I don't know who Stephanie Hans is, but that's a cool cover! So much information on that cover! I love these Jusko covers! Boobs, boobs, and more boobs! Yeah, we'll see how long this lasts More death! Do yourself a favor and read some Bertozzi! Travis Pelkie ought to buy this sucker

“… No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the lifesensation of any given epoch of one’s existence – that which makes its truth, its meaning – its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream – alone …” (Joseph Conrad, from Heart of Darkness)

More unpleasantness! Perhaps, but maybe the best cover ever? Now that's hair! Upping the ante ... yet again! Go into the light!!!! Will it be any better? Oh, man, J. Scott Campbell, why???? It looks like a piñata, but it's a severed head! Misty kicking ass! One of these days, I want to have many red dots from laser sights on my head and body! What is this strange relic? Mark does not play with any children in this comic! That can't end well Yeah, I don't know what Bane's arm is doing I'm still harping on the change in cover artists! This is not a good Gene Ha cover Arthur Adams with the awesome drawing! It's not a spider! Graphic novel goodness!

What I bought – 9 February 2011

There was no hope for an empire that lost the will to prosecute the grand and awful business of adventure. (Michael Chabon, from Gentlemen of the Road)

Who knew Edison had his own robot? Oh, Klarion - why do you have to be so mean? Fightin' crime and hangin' tough! Man, if I weren't already married, I'd insist on those two on top of the cake! You want nudity? You GOT nudity! If only you could really do that to missiles! What's Danny doing with his left hand? Who can stay mad at Alice even though her comic is late? Why does his jacket not zip straight up the middle? Is he too cool for that? After his date in this issue, how depressed can he really be? Ah, romance! Fact: Rebekah Isaacs is awesome That's a weirdly defined back/shoulder on Bethany there Charles the Fat, unfortunately, does NOT appear in this comic periodical! Catman has some anger issues Why the cover artist change? WHY?!?!?!? I love the plummeting dudes in the background even though, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense He's totally pulling a Samson! People and dinosaurs living at the same time? Why not? Yep, still buying it Yay, it's back ... but for how long? The funny thing about this cover ...... is that Dejah Thoris wears more clothes on it than in the actual comic! Man, I really like that cover Will this be the last Cap Omnibus I purchase???? Swimming through all those eyes can't be good for you! This is ... odd

What we are reluctant to touch often seems the very fabric of our salvation. (Don DeLillo, from White Noise)

Oh, it's going to get messy! A Ryan Benjamin cover? Really? There's never enough ordnance when it's ASS-KICKING TIME!!!!! It's spooky AND charming! I'm not entirely sure why she's dressed like Alice, but I guess we just have to go with it! Catman wants to punch YOU! Wait - you mean someone in this book ISN'T who they seem to be? Shocking! I'm really looking forward to reading this Who doesn't love comics about high school girls trying to find themselves? I wonder what this book's selling point is? Tomine = funny? Hey, look - a play on words!
