Frantic as a cardiograph scratching out the lines, Day 171: Strange Tales #166

Every day this year, I will be examining the first pages of random comics. This month I will be doing theme weeks, with each week devoted to comics from one decade. This week’s decade: the 1960s! Today’s page is from Strange Tales #166, which was published by Marvel (although the indicia lists “Vista Publications”) and is cover dated March 1968. I borrowed this and several other comics over the next few weeks from Howard Harris, my comics retailer, who was nice enough to let me take them home and scan them. Enjoy!

Committed: 33 Comic Books I Read in 2010

People do a lot of year end reviews, but I never have. This week I was forced to confront a year of reading all at once when I decided to clear the growing pile of comic books next to my bed. Continue Reading »

What I bought – 15 December 2010

“You see,” Lardner said at the long bar of the Artist and Writers Restaurant, “Duke thought if his dream came true he would be a different person. He’s not unhappy about the dream. He’s unhappy that he is still the same man. Happens to a lot of us. We get somewhere we wanted and find we’re still ourselves.” (Roger Kahn, from The Boys of Summer)

'Conceived' is spelled wrong on the cover!!!!! Man, those are some big-ass thighs! 'Do you like my big gun, Dick?!?!?' You gotta love that tag line! Our nation has grown by its need for the unnecessary — another name for human progress. (Daniel Boorstin, from Cleopatra’s Nose)

Ryan Sook makes everything better! Estrogina and the Zamoran pirates need to get an ongoing title NOW! Naked chicks and giant robots! Did they honestly think it could be an ongoing? Naked chicks and giant Vikings! I couldn't resist! CBR reviews get quoted on the front of Marvel books, but God forbid they quote me! Yet another cool cover! It's all true! That dude needs to chillax! I hope there's bloodshed and ugly-bumpin' in this book! Yay! More dinosaurs! Dang, this looks awesome! It's all European and shit! So much funny!

What I bought – 2 September 2009

My wish: DC should charge one thin dollar for every issue of Justice League: Gay for Justice. It’s so not worth four dollars, but man! for one dollar, I would be all over that just for the sheer entertainment value. Didn’t everyone love that panel of Prometheus slicing that woman’s head off? GOLD!

And always remember: If you’re going to hire Machete to kill the bad guy, you’d better be damn sure the bad guy isn’t you!
