What I bought – 2 December 2010

“I play with life, you say, and that is true, but I play because it pleases me; whereas Christian virtues would bore me in a day, as does the philosophy of Seneca. Because of this, Paul’s eloquence is displayed in vain. He should understand that people like me will never accept his religion. With your temperament you might either hate Christians or become a Christian immediately. I recognize, while yawning, the truth of what they say. We are mad. We are hastening to our doom, something unknown is coming toward us, something is dying around us – agreed! But life exists for itself alone, not for death.” (Henryk Sienkiewicz, from Quo Vadis)

With a Kim Basinger cameo! Yep - still icky Sixty percent of the people on this cover do NOT appear in this issue! Part six of six my ass! Well, that's charming! This looks even better than the first one! Eric Powell likes it! I hope this is Rob Schmidt-approved!

“Bonding is like the romance in an Arnold Schwarzeneggar movie.”

If it happens along the way, fine.”

But it ain’t the reason you go there.” (Bruce Feirstein, from Real Men Don’t Bond)

How does he see? Who's supposed to be shooting at him? Well, that would look weird in World War II So ...much ...coolness! ATTACK!!!!! Run, you running people, run like the wind! I've always wanted to walk casually away from an explosion More ...coolness! Yeah, I don't like the title either So much hair! She's all mysterious! Frank Quitely, gettin' paid! Oh, I get it - he's inside a whale! Ah, young, creepy love! Chicken power! It's all Eighties and shit! Let's do some analyzing! Those pants are stylin'! Well, he looks peeved

What I bought – 14 July 2010

I have always pitied poor Abraham. Here he had the sword from his sheath, only seconds away from slitting his son’s throat, and he had to sacrific a ram in his son’s place. What a disappointment it must have been. What a damn tragedy. (Jeremy Leven, from Creator)

This cover feels all Seventies, man! Are they tiptoeing so they don't wake the students up? 'Why are the readers so dim?!?!?!?!' Considering all that happens in this comic, this cover could have been a lot cooler As neat as this cover is, the variant is wicked awesome! I like the way the bullet is spraying numbers out of the dude's skull Sigh. Yet another tremendous cover in this series! Monthly? Um, yeah, maybe not This just proves it: Chicks shouldn't make comics, man! Ken Hale sez: Even though I'm a gorilla, you still wish you wuz me! Yet more propaganda! Things get worse. I know, shocking. This is monster huge, man! More Darwyn Cooke goodness! You know, you don't have enough gore in your lives! More comics goodness than you deserve! In case you're wondering, yes, J. Bone is awesome I love this uncluttered cover Who drinks pink tea? I don't even have to read this to know it's awesome! Damned landscape printing!

What I bought – 23 June 2010

“Concentration-camp existence … taught us that the whole world is really like a concentration camp,” wrote Tadeusz Borowski. “The weak work for the strong, and if they have no strength or will to work – then let them steal, or let them die. … There is no crime that a man will not commit in order to save himself. And, having saved himself, he will commit crimes for increasingly trivial reasons; he will commit them first out of duty, then from habit, and finally – for pleasure. … The world is ruled by neither justice nor morality; crime is not punished nor virtue rewarded, one is forgotten as quickly as the other. The world is ruled by power …” (Otto Friedrich, from The End of the World)

Sadly lacking in bottles of rum! Well, this title leaves no doubt about what's happening! Bruce is looking a little chunky on that cover! Yay! It's back! Francavilla really ought to mix up the layouts of the covers! Warning: This is the only time Jack appears in this comic! Once again ...... we get the story behind the cover! Yes, these aren't listed alphabetically, because of Mouse Guard's squareness and double-sidedness! Too much black! What's this? No giant white space on this cover? It's a Festivus Miracle! I'm not sure, but I think that '7' is just a little small There's a disturbing lack of Spoon in this issue I love how Rictor is running away like a scaredy-cat! Unfortunately, the actual comic does NOT feature Oscar Hempel's Merry-O-Nettes! Sam Kieth doing a book about Arkham Asylum? Yeah, I'll take that! Not unlike Picasso, Gantz has a blue phase

What I bought – 3 June 2010

“To break up the superstition and worship of legality should be our aim. Nothing would please me more than to see Inspector Heat and his likes take to shooting us down in broad daylight with the approval of the public. Half our battle would be won then; the disintegration of the old morality would have set in in its very temple.” (Joseph Conrad, from The Secret Agent)

Splode! Wait, so that hand is ...? This is just an interior panel, but what a cool cover! David Petersen is so cool ...... he's come up with a backstory for what's happening on this cover! If you put me behind some leaves so that the shadows fell dramatically across my face, I still wouldn't look as cool as this dude! Galatia manages to pull that outfit off! Can J. Scott Campbell do anything except kewl poses? I buy my Conan in man-sized chunks! Fact: Peter Snejbjerg is really good It's the Immonens! It has to be good, right? Well, I'll finally get around to reading this!

What I bought – 5 May 2010

For it is a general rule of human nature that people despise those who treat them well and look up to those who make no concessions. (Thucydides, from History of the Peloponnesian War)

This is the much better of two covers! Man, that leg shouldn't bend that way, should it? He got punched so hard math came out of his mouth! At least it's not called Mouthbreather! Dig that crazy cover, man! You don't want to see that in the middle of the blizzard! There's a light snack! Lawrence of Arabia does not appear too often in this book, but he gets the cover! How adorable! Colin Ferrell likes his penis substitute! It just keeps getting freakier! Is this on life support? This series would be a lot better if this scene actually appeared in it! Well, this looks freakin' awesome! Even though the anatomy of this cover is somewhat strange, the interior works looks stupendous! This has Kelly Thompson written all over it! So does this, in fact!

What I bought – 15 July 2009

This week: I’m still having fun with the new format! I added something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, but could never figure out. Other Greg does it all the time, though. Can you suss out what it is?

Plus: Nudity and Swearing! And the return of a long-absent publisher! Whoo-hoo! (Seriously, lots of swearing. You’ve been warned. And no, this is not a judgment about these comics at all. I just bought a lot of comics, and a lot featured swearing and nudity, so I thought it would be fun to compare and contrast.)
