“I’ve always believed, Josef, that we are more in love with desire than with the desired!” (Irvin D. Yalom, from When Nietzsche Wept)

Well, that's a phallic blade right there Appetizing! It was the style of the times! You can't stay mad at it! So much creepy sexual imagery I don't even know where to start! She's making Rockwell paranoid! I think that explosion would knock him over 'Don't tell anyone I like 2 Broke Girls!!!!!' Like the concept, hate the execution Robert Plant should have had a cameo Now batting ... the golem! More French comics! Or, as I like to call them, 'Freedom Comics'

It may, then, be said with truth that the Hebrews were the first to discover the meaning of history as the epiphany of God. (Mircea Eliade, from The Myth Of The Eternal Return)

Ms. Powers does not, in fact, appear in this comic! He fights for ... JUSTICE! The alien cover is MUCH cooler than the chick one! Nice boots! Why is her sword stuck inside his shirt? Cage Smash! Well, that can't be good Historical! You all love Ben Caldwell, right? GINORMOUS!!!! Oh, Hellboy-verse comics - you never disappoint!

Was the rise of the radical intelligentsia desirable, was their unchecked progress necessary in order that mankind might be led to the broad uplands of democratic freedom? Or was the very concept of democratic freedom a blind alley, developed to make the world safe for an intelligentsia which is only happy when playing at politics, at no matter what cost in suffering to the multitude? (Edward Crankshaw, from The Fall of the House of Habsburg)

The God of All Comics is back, baby! Man, Chaykin is pretty terrible these days, isn't he? Dang, that's a cool cover John doesn't actually go to New York in this comic Brereton + Roman history = AWESOME! Well, I mean, maybe he should move away from Death Way to give away the game, DC So much RAGE! Now THAT'S funny! With Sergio Aragones?!?!? Well, that has to suck She actually wears that hat in this comic! Omnibi rule, man!

What I bought – 30 November 2011

“Maybe I’m crazy. But there’s something in me that loves Death. I think of myself as Death, sometimes. In a scarlet shroud, floating through the night. I’m so beautiful, then. And sad. And hungry to make the whole world happy, by taking them out where I am, into the night, away from all trouble, all unhappiness … Walter, this is the awful part. I know this is terrible. I tell myself it’s terrible. But to me, it doesn’t seem terrible. It seems as though I’m doing something – that’s really best for him, if he only knew it. Do you understand me, Walter?”

“No.” (James M. Cain, from Double Indemnity)

There is no DeLorean in this book! Monkey-hanging is F-U-N! Dang, I love this cover Don't fuck with ...... the ferrets! Not a hoax! Not an imaginary issue! So much rage! What I bought – 5 October 2011

Life is like invading Russia. A blitz start, massed shakos, plumes dancing like a flustered henhouse; a period of svelte progress recorded in ebullient despatches as the enemy falls back; then the beginning of a long, morale-sapping trudge with rations getting shorter and the first snowflakes upon your face. The enemy burns Moscow and you yield to General January, whose very fingernails are icicles. Bitter retreat. Harrying Cossacks. Eventually you fall beneath a boy-gunner’s grapeshot while crossing some Polish river not even marked on your general’s map. (Julian Barnes, from Talking It Over)

You wouldn't like him when he's angry PANDAS!!!! Is anything about a Segway cool? I'm not sure why he's wearing a tree on his head - HIS HEAD!!!!! Look at me - all indy and shit! So much ripping! I like how Hyde looks like he doesn't trust Cap on that cover It's all about the trades, people! Here's another thing I could have read for free, but I paid good American money for it!

What I bought – 21 September 2011

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

“Everything bleeds, Pie. Even God. Maybe especially God. Or else why did He hide Himself away?” (Clive Barker, from Imajica)

That tag line might be true! Holy. Shit. YETI!!!! I LOVE this cover It's a nice cover, I guess, but it's kind of boilerplate Tardi!

dearest abbie who told me that in a sick society a symbol will always become a commodity (Tommy Trantino, from Lock the Lock)

Everyone out of the pool! It's not as bad as it looks Shit hits the fan! Just your standard excellent Fables cover! You mean people with different colored eyes are ... mutants?!?!? Wait, something unpleasant going on in a John Constantine comic? Alert the media! Visual Hamlet puns never go out of fashion! Simon looks pretty smug This is a bit generic, but it's better than the last few So many O-faces! I'm guessing nursing is out of the question? You can't go wrong with a machete! It's in landscape! Dayum!

“Sometimes I ask myself,” Emmerich said. “What is the function of a murderer? Is he the person you go to in order to confess?” (Don DeLillo, from The Names)

That's what happens when you stand under a ship - you get an anchor dropped on you! Seriously, DC? Some people don't read your shit in single issues, you know! Aquaman is too cool to have a three-pronged trident, man! Gross but effective! Ah! Greg Horn art!!!! He ought to use some Pert, yo! Surprisingly, I don't dig this Jock cover Still don't know who those dudes on the bottom are This cover idea has been used before, but it's still clever Speaking of ideas that remain cool ... Still wacky! Uh-oh - it appears he's about to punch reality! I'm not digging these painted covers More posing! Pregnant wolf Rahne is awesome Wagner had some leftover black paint he needed to get rid of Who doesn't love 20th-century Russian history? Commies, that's who! Oh, wait a minute ...

Revolution is the universal rule of evolution. Revolution is a universal principle of the world. Revolution is the essence of the struggle for survival or destruction in a time of transition. Revolution submits to heaven and responds to men’s needs. Revolution rejects what is corrupt and keeps the good. Revolution is the advance from barbarism to civilization. Revolution turns slaves into masters. (Zou Rong, from The Revolutionary Army)

Freaky-deaky! That bustier has to hurt a little, doesn't it? Dare you get the glow-in-the-dark variant?!?!? Do you think this A stands for 'alive'???? We can't save him ... he's too ugly!!!! Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge. (Caleb Carr, from Killing Time)

We're already referencing the first issue's cover? Really? He takes no shit! Don't look too closely at her crotch! I said DON'T LOOK!!!!! Yep - still terrible! I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!

For Vida, that moment was the beginning of happiness, and in that happiness, like some kind of disease, the beginning of her titanic jealousy, which stayed with her forever and finally drove her to her grave. Because one dies of happiness sooner than of misery. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

More free comics! I don't think Korvac can really throw a good punch when he's standing like that Things get even freakier! What's up with Hope's feet? That's what happens when you don't tie your shoes! I don't know what he's looking at! They just dig his threads, man! No, I didn't get the Brereton cover - you wanna make something of it? That's a pretty keen Manapul cover I don't know who Stephanie Hans is, but that's a cool cover! So much information on that cover! I love these Jusko covers! Boobs, boobs, and more boobs! Yeah, we'll see how long this lasts More death! Do yourself a favor and read some Bertozzi! Travis Pelkie ought to buy this sucker

“… No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the lifesensation of any given epoch of one’s existence – that which makes its truth, its meaning – its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream – alone …” (Joseph Conrad, from Heart of Darkness)

More unpleasantness! Perhaps, but maybe the best cover ever? Now that's hair! Upping the ante ... yet again! Go into the light!!!! Will it be any better? Oh, man, J. Scott Campbell, why???? It looks like a piñata, but it's a severed head! Misty kicking ass! One of these days, I want to have many red dots from laser sights on my head and body! What is this strange relic? Mark does not play with any children in this comic! That can't end well Yeah, I don't know what Bane's arm is doing I'm still harping on the change in cover artists! This is not a good Gene Ha cover Arthur Adams with the awesome drawing! It's not a spider! Graphic novel goodness!
