What I bought – 3 August 2011

“Sometimes I ask myself,” Emmerich said. “What is the function of a murderer? Is he the person you go to in order to confess?” (Don DeLillo, from The Names)

That's what happens when you stand under a ship - you get an anchor dropped on you! Seriously, DC? Some people don't read your shit in single issues, you know! Aquaman is too cool to have a three-pronged trident, man! Gross but effective! Ah! Greg Horn art!!!! He ought to use some Pert, yo! Surprisingly, I don't dig this Jock cover Still don't know who those dudes on the bottom are This cover idea has been used before, but it's still clever Speaking of ideas that remain cool ... Still wacky! Uh-oh - it appears he's about to punch reality! I'm not digging these painted covers More posing! Pregnant wolf Rahne is awesome Wagner had some leftover black paint he needed to get rid of Who doesn't love 20th-century Russian history? Commies, that's who! Oh, wait a minute ...

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

“Am I ever going to be told what you really think you’re doing?”

“You have been told.”

“Lie upon lie.”

“Perhaps that’s our way of telling the truth.” But then, as if she knew she had smiled once too often, she looked down and added quickly, “Maurice once said to me – when I had just asked him a question rather like yours – he said, ‘An answer is always a form of death.’ ” (John Fowles, from The Magus)

So many faces! I don't know how Stephanie is doing that, but man! that's a cool cover! It's all sharp points! Look - it's a random cover! Jihad Jones will take you out, man! Oh noes! For Vida, that moment was the beginning of happiness, and in that happiness, like some kind of disease, the beginning of her titanic jealousy, which stayed with her forever and finally drove her to her grave. Because one dies of happiness sooner than of misery. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

More free comics! I don't think Korvac can really throw a good punch when he's standing like that Things get even freakier! What's up with Hope's feet? That's what happens when you don't tie your shoes! I don't know what he's looking at! They just dig his threads, man! No, I didn't get the Brereton cover - you wanna make something of it? What I bought – 9 February 2011

There was no hope for an empire that lost the will to prosecute the grand and awful business of adventure. (Michael Chabon, from Gentlemen of the Road)

Who knew Edison had his own robot? Oh, Klarion - why do you have to be so mean? Fightin' crime and hangin' tough! Man, if I weren't already married, I'd insist on those two on top of the cake! You want nudity? You GOT nudity! If only you could really do that to missiles! What's Danny doing with his left hand? Who can stay mad at Alice even though her comic is late? Why does his jacket not zip straight up the middle? Is he too cool for that? After his date in this issue, how depressed can he really be? Ah, romance! Fact: Rebekah Isaacs is awesome That's a weirdly defined back/shoulder on Bethany there Charles the Fat, unfortunately, does NOT appear in this comic periodical! Catman has some anger issues Why the cover artist change? WHY?!?!?!? I love the plummeting dudes in the background even though, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense He's totally pulling a Samson! People and dinosaurs living at the same time? Why not? Yep, still buying it Yay, it's back ... but for how long? The funny thing about this cover ...... is that Dejah Thoris wears more clothes on it than in the actual comic! Man, I really like that cover Will this be the last Cap Omnibus I purchase???? Swimming through all those eyes can't be good for you! This is ... odd

What I bought – 22 December 2010

“You remember those birds that were getting sucked into the jet engines? Sometimes I lie in bed at three or four in the morning and I imagine myself flying miles above the earth, very cold, and one of those black secret spy planes is up there with the huge round engines with the spinning blades in it, the blades that look like the underside of mushrooms? The black plane’s going very fast and I’m going very fast in the opposite direction and we intersect, and I fly right through one of those jet engines, and I exit as this long fog of blood. I’m miles long, and, because it’s so cold, I’m crystalline. Very long arms, you’ll be pleased to hear. And then I recondense in bed, sshhp, as my short warm self. It must have something to do with my estrogen level. But that’s what telephone travel would be like out there, I think. What am I saying, that’s what it is like.” (Nicholson Baker, from Vox)

He's a friendly derring-doer! The hen takes one for the team! He's all rugged and handsome! I would have liked to check out the variant cover! Gene Ha's cover is the best thing about this book! More Bisley wackiness! It's like Odysseus and the sirens, sort of! Lightning makes everything more dramatic! Nick Spencer - master of self-promotion! Still awesome? Why yes, yes it is! Bullets, blood, and boobs! When Campbell does something like this, it looks trashy, but when Jusko does it, it looks heroic! It just keeps getting better!

What I bought – 17 November 2010

If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of those you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. (Ernest Hemingway, from A Farewell to Arms)

The chick on the cover looks NOTHING like the chick inside - it's two different artists, but come on! Gotta love the yellow oval! Do the Republicans know that Batman is selling us out to the United Nations? Why is the Russian girl a Rastafarian? He looks more like a dandy than a punk, doesn't he? Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!! A photo cover! Well, he doesn't look pleasant It's all dark and spooky!!!! What's she looking at? Is he moving? He's blurry! That hand needs to clutch that gun more securely, I reckon WTF? Our nation has grown by its need for the unnecessary — another name for human progress. (Daniel Boorstin, from Cleopatra’s Nose)

Ryan Sook makes everything better! Estrogina and the Zamoran pirates need to get an ongoing title NOW! Naked chicks and giant robots! Did they honestly think it could be an ongoing? Naked chicks and giant Vikings! I couldn't resist! CBR reviews get quoted on the front of Marvel books, but God forbid they quote me! Yet another cool cover! It's all true!
