But novelists write for countless reasons: for money, for fame, for reviewers, for parents, for friends, for loved ones; for vanity, for pride, for curiosity, for amusement: as skilled furniture makers enjoy making furniture, as drunkards like drinking, as judges like judging, as Sicilians like emptying a shotgun into an enemy’s back. I could fill a box with reasons, and they would all be true, though not true of all. Only one same reason is shared by all of us: we wish to create as real as, but other than the world that is. (John Fowles, from The French Lieutenant’s Woman)

Yes, Glenn Fabry drew this in 2005! I'm not sure what's going on with Williams' obsession with X-rays in this issue Kalvachev does some nice covers for this series, I'll tell you what Man, talk about zipping along! This could get messy He's just a dude who likes his vodka and milk, man! 'Nuff said! Well, holy crap He's auditioning for Flashdance! So sad it's over! Who doesn't love evil Boy Scouts?

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????

What I bought – 6 April 2011

A young girl, a frailty, simple and true, who had been unable to stand up from the piano and had had to be carried; a girl half his age; a girl who could not shoot a gun, had never been in an oyster house, atop a tower, or under the wharves; a girl hotter always than noon in August; a girl who knew nothing; had thrown him so hard that he would be out of breath forever. (Mark Helprin, from Winter’s Tale)

I know I'd be surprised if I found a tiny woman in my whiskey! You can't hide from the boobies! Well, I wouldn't want to see him coming out of the night at me, I'll tell you what My daughters could design a better trade dress than that! I miss Amadeus already! Auf wiedersehen, Misty! This cover doesn't even pretend to have anything to do with the interiors! That won't end well TOTALLY worth the wait! I have no idea why the cat doll is on this cover I'm back on board, baby! I'm digging the different colors on each cover! That's gotta hurt! Full of piratical goodness!

Thanks to the mild weather, the trees retained their foliage longer than usual. Red and gold, ocher and amber leaped to the eye. How beautifully the leaves aged on ten thousand twigs! No politics could produce such glory in a forest. Only so natural and simple a thing as death. (Frederic Morton, from A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888/1889)

What I bought – 5 January 2011

“I have told my sons that they are not under any circumstances to take part in massacres, and that the news of massacres of enemies is not to fill them with satisfaction or glee.

“I have also told them not to work for companies which make massacre machinery, and to express contempt for people who think we need machinery like that.” (Kurt Vonnegut, from Slaughterhouse-5)

Who doesn't heart Tabitha? Beware the 'roid rage! I have no idea what's happening on this cover Keepin' it old school! Just because she's dead doesn't mean she can't love! Biff! Pow! WHO? WHO?!?!?!? I hope an Eighties power ballad is playing in the background on this cover! Oh dear - it's never pretty!
