George looked at his granddaughter’s empty suit. He thought of Job. Satan lacked imagination. To crack a man’s faith, one need not resort to burning his flesh, ruining his finances, or any such obvious afflictions. One need only take a man’s species away from him. (James Morrow, This Is The Way The World Ends)

And now let us believe in the long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been. (Rainier Maria Rilke)

World's worst amusement park ride? Misdirection! Jackal in a space suit! That's a lot of rounds, yo Damn Made you look! You don't use 'shambling' with regard to actual people too much, but that's what Dex looks like she's doing Benday dots! Could this be the first toy from this comic? Ultra-mod! I wouldn't trust that chicken Conan ANGRY! It's about time! That's still pretty ridiculous

“And the good thing about feeling really happy, you know, Valentin? … It’s that you think it’s forever, that one’s never ever going to feel unhappy again.” (Manuel Puig, from Kiss of the Spider Woman)

She should be keeping her eyes in front! It's all grim and gritty! I don't know why this dude is on this cover Don't look down at his crotch! Dang, Biz Sif's idea of foreplay is ... something Insert Schwarzenegger-esque pun here! There's nothing more exciting than someone reading a book on a comic cover! Is the wolf throwing him, or is he leaping at the wolf? Well, that's no fun Turn on a light, man! Well, they're in a heap o' trouble This is a weirdly bad cover, and I can't really put my finger on why So many dames! Even more anthropomorphic animals! It's GIGANTIC! Holy crap, this looks cool It's SUPER-GIGANTIC!

The Spartans were perfectly aware of the atrocious suffering they were inflicting and never imagined their victims could forget it. The solution was to establish terror as a normal condition of life — and that was Sparta’s great invention: to create a situation in which terror was seen as something normal. (Robert Calasso, from The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony)

All the stories will be named after famous musicals! I would totally see the World's Finest Dinner Theatre Man, this should have been better! Why wasn't this free? Does that bow make any sense? It's the Visible Man! Packed with awesome! Wait ... does someone get killed horribly in this volume?

All art is quite useless. (Oscar Wilde, from The Picture of Dorian Gray)

I'm still freaked out by the blond yelling dude! Yep, they're bad-ass Man, that has to be some sort of sexual assault, isn't it? Controversy!!!! Why can't Boom's foreign reprints have better covers? Dang, they're all coming for him!

What I bought – 21 September 2011

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

What I bought – May and June 2011

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. This is more of a “What I bought and the random thoughts I have about the issues and, why not, what I did in Pennsylvania for seven-and-a-half weeks.” Can you handle that??????
