What I bought – 7 December 2011

“A child is born into a world of phenomena all equal in their power to enslave. It sniffs — it sucks — it strokes its eyes over the whole uncomfortable range. Suddenly one strikes. Why? Moments snap together like magnets, forging a chain of shackles. Why? I can trace them. I can even, with time, pull them apart again. But why at the start they were ever magnetized at all — just those particular moments of experience and no others — I don’t know. And nor does anyone else. Yet if I don’t know — if I can never know that — then what am I doing here? I don’t mean clinically doing or socially doing — I mean fundamentally! These questions, these Whys, are fundamental — yet they have no place in a consulting room. So then, do I? … This is the feeling more and more with me — No Place. Displacement … ‘Account for me,’ says staring Equus. ‘First account for Me! …’ ” (Peter Shaffer, from “Equus”)

Who knew baseball was so violent? You probably shouldn't name your structure Suicide Bridge if you don't want people jumping from it This is a homage, but I can't remember what it's homaging Jamie really shouldn't be bobbing for apples in the middle of this issue

My granddaughter Andrea wrote a composition for school in which she said that she liked her “grandmother’s imagination.” I asked her what she was referring to, and without hesitation she replied, “You remember things that never happened.” Don’t we all do that? (Isabel Allende, from My Invented Country)

This is why you shouldn't take walks in the snow! This is why you shouldn't go into space! This is why you shouldn't send an android into space! This is why you shouldn't let other winds into your castle! This is why you shouldn't do big events! This is why Hope should use conditioner! This is why John should wear clothes! This is why you shouldn't swear off killing! This is why you shouldn't fly through wormholes! This is why you shouldn't cancel the title, because Greg Land is the final artist of Uncanny X-Men! This is why you shouldn't unzip your costume! This is why you should talk to your son! This is why you shouldn't make shit up when you're kids! This is why you should work out that booty! What I bought – 21 September 2011

He lay with a pack of panting dogs on a hill overlooking plains where antelope grazed. He marched with ants, and labored in the rigors of the nest, filing eggs. He danced the mating dance of the bower bird, and slept on a warm rock with his lizard kin. He was a cloud. He was the shadow of a cloud. He was the moon that cast the shadow of a cloud. He was a blind fish; he was a shoal; he was a whale; he was the sea. He was the lord of all he surveyed. He was a worm in the dung of a kite. He did not grieve, knowing his life was a day long, or an hour. He did not wonder who made him. He did not wish to be other. He did not pray. He did not hope. He only was, and was, and was, and that was the joy of it. (Clive Barker, from Sacrament)

Man, Geof Darrow should draw more comics Yet another freaky cover by Ruas! Esquejo's covers are pretty but somewhat generic I very much doubt that John shops at Hot Topic Faerber's back! At no point in this comic does Una chop off a giant pig's head, which is kind of sad I LOVE the cover design for this series So much burning! It looks like Songbird got caught enjoying a delicious chocolate treat Well, that's dull Scrambled or over-easy? 'Oh, that's where I left my lunch!' Can't those two just get along? So much prose!!!! It's trade-waiting time!

dearest abbie who told me that in a sick society a symbol will always become a commodity (Tommy Trantino, from Lock the Lock)

Everyone out of the pool! It's not as bad as it looks Shit hits the fan! Just your standard excellent Fables cover! You mean people with different colored eyes are ... mutants?!?!? Wait, something unpleasant going on in a John Constantine comic? Alert the media! Visual Hamlet puns never go out of fashion! Simon looks pretty smug This is a bit generic, but it's better than the last few So many O-faces! I'm guessing nursing is out of the question? You can't go wrong with a machete! It's in landscape! Dayum!

“Sometimes I ask myself,” Emmerich said. “What is the function of a murderer? Is he the person you go to in order to confess?” (Don DeLillo, from The Names)

That's what happens when you stand under a ship - you get an anchor dropped on you! Seriously, DC? Some people don't read your shit in single issues, you know! Aquaman is too cool to have a three-pronged trident, man! Gross but effective! Ah! Greg Horn art!!!! He ought to use some Pert, yo! Surprisingly, I don't dig this Jock cover Still don't know who those dudes on the bottom are This cover idea has been used before, but it's still clever Speaking of ideas that remain cool ... Still wacky! Uh-oh - it appears he's about to punch reality! I'm not digging these painted covers More posing! Pregnant wolf Rahne is awesome Wagner had some leftover black paint he needed to get rid of Who doesn't love 20th-century Russian history? Commies, that's who! Oh, wait a minute ...

What I bought – 20 and 27 July 2011

Later, over cigarettes and coffee, Perry returned to the subject of thievery. “My friend Willie-Jay used to talk about it. He used to say that all crimes were only varieties of theft. Murder included. When you kill a man you steal his life. I guess that makes me a pretty big thief. See, Don – I did kill them. Down there in court, old Dewey made it sound like I was prevaricating – on account of Dick’s mother. Well, I wasn’t. Dick helped me, he held the flashlight and picked up the shells. And it was his idea, too. But Dick didn’t shoot them, he never could’ve – though he’s damn quick when it comes to running down an old dog. I wonder why I did it.” He scowled, as though the problem was new to him, a newly unearthed stone of surprising, unclassified color. “I don’t know why,” he said, as if holding it to the light, and angling it now here, now there. “I was sore at Dick. The tough brass boy. But it wasn’t Dick. Or the fear of being identified. I was willing to take that gamble. And it wasn’t because of anything the Clutters did. They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it.” (Truman Capote, from In Cold Blood)

Hey, look at that! I’m back in Arizona and I picked up almost two months’ worth of comics! Yeah, I’m not going to review them properly here – that would take waaaaaaaay too long. I like the exclamation points after the creators' names It's Shawn Spencer! Will they call this the Great Thumb Saga? Hamlet: Still a waffler! At no time in this issue does a man grow a giant blade from his wrist He might have turned into a monster, but at least his moustaches are still stylish! Boy, I don't like that cover Remember Guido's tuft of hair? When did he lose that? Time Travely! Veiny! Martiany! Historicy! Seriousy!

For Vida, that moment was the beginning of happiness, and in that happiness, like some kind of disease, the beginning of her titanic jealousy, which stayed with her forever and finally drove her to her grave. Because one dies of happiness sooner than of misery. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

More free comics! I don't think Korvac can really throw a good punch when he's standing like that Things get even freakier! What's up with Hope's feet? That's what happens when you don't tie your shoes! I don't know what he's looking at! They just dig his threads, man! No, I didn't get the Brereton cover - you wanna make something of it? “… No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the lifesensation of any given epoch of one’s existence – that which makes its truth, its meaning – its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream – alone …” (Joseph Conrad, from Heart of Darkness)

More unpleasantness! Perhaps, but maybe the best cover ever? Now that's hair! Upping the ante ... yet again! Go into the light!!!! Will it be any better? Oh, man, J. Scott Campbell, why???? It looks like a piñata, but it's a severed head! Misty kicking ass! One of these days, I want to have many red dots from laser sights on my head and body! What is this strange relic? Mark does not play with any children in this comic! That can't end well Yeah, I don't know what Bane's arm is doing I'm still harping on the change in cover artists! There was no hope for an empire that lost the will to prosecute the grand and awful business of adventure. (Michael Chabon, from Gentlemen of the Road)

Who knew Edison had his own robot? Oh, Klarion - why do you have to be so mean? Fightin' crime and hangin' tough! Man, if I weren't already married, I'd insist on those two on top of the cake! You want nudity? You GOT nudity! If only you could really do that to missiles! What's Danny doing with his left hand? Who can stay mad at Alice even though her comic is late? Why does his jacket not zip straight up the middle? Is he too cool for that? After his date in this issue, how depressed can he really be? Ah, romance! Fact: Rebekah Isaacs is awesome That's a weirdly defined back/shoulder on Bethany there Charles the Fat, unfortunately, does NOT appear in this comic periodical! Catman has some anger issues Why the cover artist change? WHY?!?!?!? I love the plummeting dudes in the background even though, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense He's totally pulling a Samson! People and dinosaurs living at the same time? Why not? Yep, still buying it Yay, it's back ... but for how long? The funny thing about this cover ...... is that Dejah Thoris wears more clothes on it than in the actual comic! Man, I really like that cover Will this be the last Cap Omnibus I purchase???? Swimming through all those eyes can't be good for you! This is ... odd

“Do you know what it is to throw a child in the air and catch it on a knife in front of its mother? To be tied to a burning log? To have your ass split with an axe so that you beg the Serbs, beg them, to shoot you in the head and they don’t?

“And they go to their church after. They go to their goddamn church. I have no words …”

Ismail shuddered. “There are things that are beyond evil, that you just can’t speak about.” (Robert Kaplan, from Balkan Ghosts)

Damn you, Blair Butler!!!! Everything on this cover takes place inside! So ... much ... symbolism! I love the snarky headline It's all spooky, man! Huh Yep Shouldn't she be rejecting the bourgeois notion of jewelry? Wait, how many more issues are there? Quick Draw McGraw he ain't More bad-assery! I dig me some Sherlock Holmes!

What I bought – 5 January 2011

“I have told my sons that they are not under any circumstances to take part in massacres, and that the news of massacres of enemies is not to fill them with satisfaction or glee.

“I have also told them not to work for companies which make massacre machinery, and to express contempt for people who think we need machinery like that.” (Kurt Vonnegut, from Slaughterhouse-5)

Who doesn't heart Tabitha? Beware the 'roid rage! I have no idea what's happening on this cover Keepin' it old school! Just because she's dead doesn't mean she can't love! Biff! Pow! WHO? WHO?!?!?!? I hope an Eighties power ballad is playing in the background on this cover! Oh dear - it's never pretty!
